Reset your Steam password without signing in. Follow the recovery steps, fix missing codes, and regain access without your email or phone.
From Steam’s sign-in screen, select Help, I can’t sign in, then I forgot my Steam Account name or password. Find the account with its email address or phone number, enter Steam’s verification code, select the account and create a new, unique password. The old password is not required.
Steam password reset steps
You can reset a Steam password through the client or Steam’s official support page without an active signed-in session.
- Start from Steam’s sign-in screen. Select Help, I can’t sign in. If the client is unavailable, open Steam Support by manually entering Steam’s official web address rather than following a search advert or unsolicited email link.
- Choose the forgotten-password option. Select I forgot my Steam Account name or password.
- Find the account. Enter the email address or telephone number linked to it. If Steam offers an account-name search, you can use that instead.
- Select the correct account. More than one Steam account can share an email address, so check the permanent account name carefully.
- Request and enter the verification code. Steam will offer an available recovery method, usually email or SMS. Enter the newest code sent through the recovery flow.
- Create a new password. Use a password that is unique to Steam, save it in a password manager and sign in again. Complete any Steam Guard check that follows.
A mistake we see often is entering the public profile name instead of the Steam account name. Profile names can be changed and duplicated; the account name used for signing in is different.
Choose the correct recovery route
The correct Steam recovery route depends on what is actually preventing access.

Why isn’t the Steam verification code arriving?
A missing recovery code is usually caused by an incorrect account address, filtering by the email provider or repeated code requests.
- Check the entered address. It must be the email or telephone number attached to the Steam account, which may be an older one.
- Check filtered mail. Look in spam, junk and quarantine folders, and confirm the mailbox is not full.
- Avoid repeated requests. Allow time for delivery and use the most recent code if you requested several.
- Distinguish recovery from Steam Guard. A password-reset code is not the same as the rotating code from the mobile authenticator. Use Steam’s dedicated Steam Guard recovery option if the password is known but the authenticator is unavailable.
If the linked email account may also be compromised, secure that mailbox first. Otherwise, an intruder may intercept the reset message and regain control.
What if you no longer have the email or phone?
Use the no-access option presented by Steam’s recovery flow and submit an account-ownership request.
Steam may ask for information connecting you to the account, such as its original email address, previous contact details, purchase references, billing information requested by the form or a retail activation key redeemed on that account. Supply only what the official form requests. Never disclose your password, full payment-card details or a Steam Guard code.
Do not create a replacement account expecting the old library to move across. Game licences remain attached to the original Steam account and generally cannot be transferred to a new one.
What should you do if the Steam account was stolen?
Use Steam’s stolen-account recovery route rather than the ordinary forgotten-password option if account details were changed without your permission.
- Secure the linked email account. Change its password and enable its additional authentication protection.
- Check the device. Scan for malware before entering the new Steam password, especially if credentials may have been captured by a fake sign-in page.
- Recover through Steam Support. Provide ownership evidence only through the official recovery form.
- Lock down the restored account. Enable or reconfigure Steam Guard, remove unfamiliar authorised devices and web authorisations, and review contact details, purchases and trade activity.
Do not share a one-time code or approve an unexpected mobile confirmation. Legitimate support does not need your password or authentication code to verify ownership.
Does resetting a Steam password delete games?
No. A Steam password reset does not delete installed games, account licences, achievements or existing save files. If the library appears empty after recovery, you have probably signed into a different Steam account.
Steam Cloud saves should become available again after the correct account signs in and synchronisation is enabled. Local-only saves remain on the computer, but a password reset cannot restore files that were already deleted or overwritten.
