This freeware package for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 showcases a classic Varig Boeing 737-200 under registration PP-VME, featuring meticulously crafted textures and authentic flight behavior. Enthusiasts of retro liveries will appreciate the old color scheme that Varig operated historically, and the included base model ensures a complete, ready-to-fly experience. Model design is by Erick Cantu, flight dynamics are courtesy of Mike Baumann, and the refined repaint is the work of Adriano Martoni.

Classic Boeing 737-200 in Brazilian Colors

The Boeing 737-200 is a short- to medium-haul narrow-body aircraft that saw prolific service around the world between 1967 and 1988. During this period, over a thousand frames were produced, making the -200 variant one of the quintessential airliners of its time. Varig, the pioneering Brazilian flag carrier once known as Viação Aérea Rio-Grandense, operated many of these aircraft on domestic and select regional routes. This particular repaint, labeled PP-VME, highlights the airline’s retro color palette for enthusiasts looking to recreate authentic historical flights.

Technical Detailing and Texture Fidelity

The repaint takes advantage of hi-resolution 32-bit artwork to deliver crisp detailing, capturing the distinctive lines of the fuselage, the subtle variations of wear on the metal surfaces, and the accurate Varig branding. It was created using carefully executed digital painting methods to emphasize panel lines, rivets, and the unique curves of the Boeing 737-200 airframe. Meanwhile, the flight characteristics have been meticulously tuned, making use of Mike Baumann’s FDE expertise to reflect the performance of JT8D-17R engines and replicate the aircraft’s handling dynamics from taxi to touchdown.

Included Smoke Effect

A common sight on classic 737s is the visible plume produced by older turbofan units. This package incorporates a custom smoke effect file named SMOKE_JT8D, which replicates the characteristic exhaust trail of these engines. This detail adds an extra layer of immersion for virtual aviators who delight in historically accurate simulation features.

Easy Setup Procedure

To begin flying this aircraft, first extract the B732_VRG_OC folder into your main Aircraft directory within Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. After that, locate the SMOKE_JT8D file and position it inside the primary Effects folder in your simulator’s root installation path. This ensures you benefit from the accompanying visual elements whenever the engines spool up.
