This repaint introduces a detailed Capitol Airways livery for the classic twin-engine Curtiss C-46 Commando. Created specifically for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, it showcases vintage markings reminiscent of Capitol Airways operations from the early 1960s. The authors behind the original aircraft model are Libar Guzman, Greg Pepper, and Tom Gibson, while Dave McQueen developed this repaint. These textures require the c46ga.zip freeware base package, which is available in the Fly Away Simulation file library.

Classic Twin-Engine Freighter Design

The Curtiss C-46 Commando served as a resilient cargo transport, originally designed for military service. Known for its roomy fuselage and rugged powerplants, it was often utilized for hauling freight in challenging weather. In this Capitol Airways repaint, the exterior detailing captures the airline’s signature markings, providing an authentic look for fans of mid-century commercial and cargo aviation.

Repaint Attributes

This texture set focuses on period-specific accents, including the airline name along the fuselage and appropriately placed registration. Details such as subtle weathering effects and realistic metallic finishes enhance the visual appearance. Since this package only contains the paint files, the separately downloadable C-46 Commando base model from Fly Away Simulation’s library is required.

Installation Steps

  • Ensure the original C-46 base pack (c46ga.zip) is already installed.
  • Locate the “GA C46” folder inside your simulator directory (common paths are Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\GA C46 or Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\GA C46).
  • Extract the “texture.capitol” directory from this download and place it in the “GA C46” folder.
  • Use a text editor to add the following [fltsim.x] entry to the aircraft.cfg. Insert it beneath the final aircraft listing, and replace the x with the next sequential number.

Configuration Detail

After placing this code, modify the initial line to match the numerical sequence used in your aircraft.cfg. In other words, if the preceding entry is [fltsim.7], update [fltsim.12] to [fltsim.8]. This repaint will then be recognized in the simulator’s aircraft selection menu under Curtiss > C-46A Commando > Capitol.

Developer Notes

The textures were authored by Dave McQueen to honor the heritage of Capitol Airways. Special acknowledgment goes to Libar Guzman, Greg Pepper, and Tom Gibson for bringing the original C-46 model to life, ensuring flight dynamics and visual fidelity remain faithful to this vintage cargo workhorse.
