This freeware repaint features the later-era South African Airways (SAA) markings for the Douglas DC-7B, widely recognized in aviation circles as one of the fastest piston-powered airliners introduced in the 1950s. SAA itself deployed this type across long-haul routes, including the path over the Indian Ocean to Perth, after previously operating the Lockheed Constellation. These particular DC-7B aircraft were disposed of locally around 1966/7. The new livery showcased here was created by Andre Reimers, while Greg Pepper and Tom Gibson developed the original aircraft model. This package is specifically designed for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (FS2004), but it can also be adapted for FSX by following the extra steps below.

Historic Notes and Distinctive Attributes

The DC-7B reflected Douglas Aircraft Company’s pursuit of extended range and faster cross-continental flying. By the mid-1950s, South African Airways began incorporating this model for premier routes to Europe, as well as the so-called Wallaby service headed to Western Australia. This airliner delivered a pressurized cabin and advanced radial engines, each defined by a multi-row cylinder arrangement (meaning multiple banked rings of cylinders), which propelled the type to notably high cruising speeds during that era. Once the airframes transitioned away from international paths, they were placed into domestic routes before eventual sale to other operators.

Essential Base Model Acquisition

  • Download and install the CalClassic International DC-7B base model if it has not been updated recently. This version is known as the American Airlines DC-7B package.
  • Separate from that, install the CalClassic DC-7 panel and sound set (often included with the United Airlines DC-7 Base Pack) to ensure you have the correct cockpit configuration and audio environment.
  • If you have pre-existing add-on paints, make a backup of your aircraft.cfg file by labeling it aircraft_old.cfg before proceeding. This approach helps preserve any previous custom entries.
  • When using FSX, remember to move all necessary folders from the FSX/Aircraft directory into the FSX/Simobjects/Airplanes folder, so that the simulator recognizes these files.

Implementing the SAA Repaint

  • Extract the texture.saa_dke_late folder into either your FS9/Aircraft/DC-7B Intl directory for FS2004 or the FSX/Simobjects/Airplanes/DC-7B Intl path for FSX.
  • Open the aircraft.cfg in the corresponding DC-7B International folder and insert the following snippet at the end of the existing [fltsim] entries:

    [fltsim.X]
    title=DC-7B South African Airways ZS-DKE - Late
    sim=dc7B
    model=
    panel=
    sound=
    texture=saa_zs-dke_late
    kb_checklists=
    kb_reference=dc7B_ref
    ui_manufacturer=Douglas
    ui_type=DC-7B
    ui_variation=South African Airways ZS-DKE - Late
    atc_heavy=0
    atc_id=ZS-DKE
    atc_airline=Springbok
    atc_flight_number=SA214
    description=This aircraft was acquired in March 1956 and was used on the Johannesburg to London first class routes and later on the Wallaby service to Perth Australia. Late paint.
    prop_anim_ratio=0.9

  • Modify the X in [fltsim.X] so it becomes the next sequential number in your list.
  • After saving, the repaint should appear as Douglas DC-7B South African Airways ZS-DKE - Late in your simulator’s aircraft selection menu.

Additional Notes

  • This repaint is for a freeware DC-7B model and does not include the actual aircraft components. The base model is available in the Fly Away Simulation library.
  • All flight dynamics, panels, and sound sets rely on the CalClassic files mentioned above. Ensure each required part is installed to avoid missing elements.
  • Once installed correctly, the aircraft will be ready for intercontinental flights or domestic routes replicating SAA’s historical operations with the DC-7B.

Have a wonderful time exploring the legendary capabilities of this iconic airliner under the classic South African Airways livery.
