Dive into an accurate and modernized AFCAD2 configuration for Düsseldorf Airport (EDDL/DUS) in Germany, meticulously crafted by Alex Probst. This freeware package is tailored for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 and fully aligns with German Airports commercial scenery. It refines essential taxiway labels, gate placements, and airline assignments to retain real-world authenticity, making ground operations more immersive for virtual pilots.

Highly Detailed Parking and Taxiway Layouts

Leveraging up-to-date apron charts, this AFCAD2 file redefines each taxiway and gate label throughout the airfield. While individual gate numbers could differ from older visual scenery elements, the underlying taxiway references match current airport diagrams for a realistic rendition. The parking details incorporate new AFCAD2 gate assignment functionality, reflecting daily usage patterns observed at Düsseldorf and confirmed by photographic references from various aviation sources.

Dynamic Airline Allocations

This configuration includes airline-specific slot allocations. When your AI fleet features matching airline codes in the aircraft.cfg file, you will notice AI traffic routing to the correct terminals and gates. If you prefer not to use these customized gate assignments, feel free to modify or remove them using AFCAD2. This ensures complete freedom in aligning the gate configurations with your virtual airline setup.

Efficient Installation Procedure

  1. Create a dedicated folder inside your Addon Scenery directory (e.g., X:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Addon Scenery\DUS_AFCAD).
  2. Within this new folder, generate a subdirectory named scenery.
  3. Place the provided .bgl file into the scenery subfolder.
  4. Start Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 and navigate to Settings > Addon Scenery > Add Scenery to register the newly created folder.
  5. Restart the simulator, and this enhanced AFCAD file will become active immediately.

Quick Removal Steps

To revert to the default airport layout, simply delete the folder you created (DUS_AFCAD or any name you chose) and remove its corresponding entry from the sim’s Scenery Library. This action restores the original Düsseldorf Airport settings since default sceneries remain intact, unaffected by this custom AFCAD file.

Common Inquiries

Do I need AFCAD software installed for this to work?
There is no requirement to have AFCAD on your system. You can manually install this file by placing it in your addon folder and activating it in the simulator’s scenery settings.
Does this fix visual problems in my German Airports commercial scenery?
AFCAD2 only alters placement data within the stock airport layout. It does not modify or patch any visual textures that come with commercial scenery, so existing rendering issues remain unchanged.
Why do some aircraft park at remote stands instead of terminal gates?
This likely happens when AI aircraft lack the specific airline code within their aircraft.cfg files. By default, these planes move to any unassigned stand. As a workaround, you can either remove the airline assignments with AFCAD2 or add the correct IATA/ICAO codes to each aircraft in your collection.

Notable Acknowledgments

This project would not be possible without Lee Swordy, the creator of AFCAD2, whose innovative tools have drastically improved airport layouts in the sim community. The German Airports series, offered by Aerosoft, is fully patched for FS9 and pairs seamlessly with this AFCAD configuration. Detailed airport layouts referenced from eddl.de, along with various aviation imaging sources, provided the groundwork for realistic gate and connection arrangements.
