FSX Iberia Lockheed L1011 Tristar

Iberia’s Lockheed L-1011 TriStar TF-ABM returns in a historically grounded repaint that captures the airline’s short 1997–1998 wet-lease period with crisp DDS textures in 2048 or performance-friendly 1024 resolution for FSX. It requires the Thomas Ruth and Erick Cantu L1011-100 freeware base model and includes accurate registration and airline details.

This repaint delivers a vivid depiction of Iberia’s Lockheed L1011 TriStar, originally leased from Air Atlanta Icelandic (identified as TF-ABM) between late 1997 and mid-1998. It is intended for flight simulation admirers who wish to enhance their virtual flights with a historically accurate Iberia scheme. Although the base model designed by Thomas Ruth and Erick Cantu is not included, you can obtain it separately through the Fly Away Simulation library. Below, you will find detailed instructions on installing the textures, as well as further information about its specifications and background.

Key Add-On Attributes

  • High-Fidelity Textures: Choose between 2048×2048 DDS high-resolution renders or 1024×1024 DDS for improved performance.
  • Authentic Registration: Reflects TF-ABM, tied to Iberia’s wet lease arrangement from Air Atlanta Icelandic.
  • Wide-Body Efficiency: Depicts the classic Lockheed L1011 TriStar (sometimes referred to as the “TriStar L-1011”), famous for its tri-jet layout and advanced engineering when it first debuted.
  • Developer Insights: Textures created by Paul Craig, compatible with the Lockheed L1011-100 freeware base package by Thomas Ruth and Erick Cantu.

Historical and Technical Background

Lockheed’s L1011 TriStar made its first flight in November 1969. It later entered service with Eastern Air Lines in April 1972. Built in limited quantity (250 airframes produced until 1982), it showcased advanced systems such as an automatic flight control system for the final approach and an innovative RB211 engine design from Rolls-Royce. Meanwhile, Iberia, headquartered in Spain, has a legacy of operating various wide-body jets in its long-haul fleet. During the late 1990s, the airline briefly utilized this TriStar variant via leasing agreements, providing unique operational flexibility for transatlantic and European routes.

Installation Guidelines

  1. Extract the downloaded file into a temporary folder.
  2. Depending on your preference:
    • For enhanced performance, install the textures from the “1024×1024 textures” folder.
    • For higher visual fidelity, use the “2048×2048 textures” folder instead.
  3. Copy the folder named texture.Iberia into the “Tom_L1011-100” directory, commonly found at:
    OS (C)/Program Files(x86)/Microsoft Games/Microsoft Flight Simulator X/SimObjects/Airplanes/Tom_L1011-100
  4. Before editing the aircraft.cfg file, create a backup copy. Then add the following entry, adjusting the “X” to the subsequent fltsim index:
[fltsim.X]

sim=tom1011

If you encounter any challenges while modifying the aircraft.cfg file, temporarily copy it to another location, carry out the edits, and then move it back into the aircraft folder.

Requires dependencies

This add-on may require the following files to function properly. If this is a repaint, the dependency below is likely the base aircraft package.

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D add-on
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Place files per the readme

Most FSX add-ons go into one of: SimObjects\Airplanes\, Addon Scenery\, Effects\, or Gauges\.
  3. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.
