Oneonta Municipal Airport (N66), nestled in the rolling hills of upstate New York, now receives a comprehensive upgrade designed by Jim Cook. This freeware scenery offers a fresh representation of this general aviation hub for Microsoft Flight Simulator X, introducing detailed aircraft parking areas and enhanced airport structures throughout.
Major Changes to the Airfield Environment
This release transforms Oneonta Municipal Airport with custom replacements for all existing buildings, adding a host of new static objects and refined ground details. Jim Cook has meticulously incorporated various eye-catching elements, such as stationary aircraft, road vehicles, and numerous environmental details that bring the location to life.
Ground Adjustments and Parking Additions
To better accommodate general aviation (GA) activity, new dedicated parking spots have been implemented in a way that aligns with real-life airport data. Pilots who frequent this airfield in the actual world will appreciate the effort to mimic actual layouts, as AirNav diagrams and Google Earth imagery were both referenced during development.
Optional Flight Environment Compatibility
This scenery package is fully operational on its own, making use of default scenery libraries in FSX. Although Jim Cook utilizes Ultimate Terrain and FSGenesis for his personal setup, these add-ons are not needed to enjoy the Oneonta Municipal Airport enhancements. Everything relies solely on the simulator’s built-in object database, ensuring easy installation.
Improved Local Flight Experiences
For flight sim enthusiasts planning longer routes, consider picking up the companion scenery for Sidney, New York, also developed by Jim Cook. Sidney Municipal Airport sits just a short flight down Interstate 88, delivering additional immersion and an extended network of GA hubs across this picturesque region of the United States.
Technical Tools and Design Process
Extensive modifications were carried out using Flight 1’s AFX program for airport layouts and Instant Scenery for customized placements of objects. These utilities allowed for precise alignment with real-world data, producing an airport experience that closely mirrors the actual layout.
Installation Steps
- Extract both AFX_N66_JC.bgl and N66_JC.bgl into your “Addon Scenery/Scenery” folder.
- Restart Microsoft Flight Simulator X to load the updated scenery.
