This comprehensive free enhancement for the default FSX rendition of Ruzyne Airport (LKPR) in Prague, Czech Republic, introduces a more accurate airfield layout, improved vehicle paths, and updated terminals. Created by Ray Smith, it integrates advanced design tactics to accommodate various runway settings, including an operational crosswind configuration. Installers will discover refined taxi signage, more precise gate allocations, and expanded airside roads, all aimed at delivering a more authentic flying environment.
Precision Modifications for Prague’s Busy Hub
These files target the default airport in Flight Simulator X and were generated using the latest iteration of Airport Design Editor (v1.47). The design sequence makes it possible to choose between two runway modes: one that enables the crosswind runway to run in parallel with the established main strips, and another that focuses on the customary main runway pattern. If you use the crosswind-enabled [crosswind: allows an additional runway to function simultaneously with primary runways] variant, expect both main runways to handle takeoffs and landings concurrently.
Notable Enhancements
- Accurate Parking Layout: Updated gate assignments provide more realistic airline parking positions.
- Runway 4/22 Closure: Mirroring the actual field, runway 4/22 is condensed and marked out of service in one of the file options.
- Reengineered Taxiway Network: All taxi routes and signs have been revised to match real-world designations.
- Ground Service Roads: Improved vehicle paths run behind terminals, ensuring minimal interference with taxiing aircraft.
- Tower Perspective: The tower camera originates from the roof of the control tower, providing expansive views of the airfield.
Available BGL Files
- LKPR_ADE_RS.BGL
- Utilizes the standard runway configuration. This maintains characteristic airport operations without activating the crosswind strip.
- LKPR_ADE_CW_RS.BGL
- Employs Jim Vile’s crosswind runway technique, enabling simultaneous operation of two primary runways.
- LKPR_ADE_CVX.bgl
- Adds crucial roadways behind terminals; always keep this component active.
- LKPR_ADE_OBJ.BGL
- Contains scenery objects needed for both versions and goes into the global scenery folder.
File Placement and Setup
- Choose one of the RS BGL files (LKPR_ADE_RS.BGL or LKPR_ADE_CW_RS.BGL) based on your preferred runway arrangement, along with LKPR_ADE_CVX.bgl. Place these files in your “Flight Simulator X/Addon Scenery/scenery” directory.
- Move LKPR_ADE_OBJ.BGL into “Flight Simulator X/Scenery/Global/scenery.”
- To ensure jetway bridges display correctly, Copy the jfk_jetway.dds (day texture) and jfk_jetway_LM.dds (night texture) from “Flight Simulator X/Scenery/NAME/Texture” to “Flight Simulator X/Scenery/Global/Texture.” If this step was completed for any previous airport modifications by Ray Smith, no further action is required here.
- Restart Flight Simulator X so that all modifications take effect.
Note: Only maintain a single LKPR RS BGL (either the crosswind version or the default version) alongside LKPR_ADE_CVX.bgl in the Addon Scenery folder at any one time. Including multiple LKPR BGLs simultaneously can introduce conflicting parking allocations.
Additional Details
When using the crosswind-runway edition (LKPR_ADE_CW_RS.BGL), the ATIS might reference “fake” runway entries. Since it is the method employed to keep multiple runways operational for FSX, you can safely ignore those extra announcements. If you would prefer the default transmissions without hearing the crosswind runway, simply opt for LKPR_ADE_RS.BGL instead.
Removing the Modification
To revert to the default airport, remove or delete the installed BGL files and start FSX anew. The simulator will then load the original rendition.
Developer Acknowledgments
- Ray Smith – Designer of these scenic enhancements and configuration files.
- Jon Masterson – Creator of the ADE utility (freeware), which was critical in producing these BGLs.
- Jim Vile – Provided his crosswind runway activation method.
- The developer’s spouse, for patience during the file creation process.
Tip for Tower Exploration
While in tower view, assign a keystroke or controller button to the “View track/pan Toggle.” Once engaged, you can pivot and scan the airport’s perimeter using your hat switch, providing a robust vantage point over the entire airfield. Toggling again will refocus on your aircraft.
Enjoy refining your flight experience around Prague, and have a fulfilling time simming with these expertly tuned enhancements by Ray Smith.
