Bring an authentic World War II training experience into Microsoft Flight Simulator X with this freeware variation of the Fairchild PT-26. Originally crafted by J.E. Narcizo for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, this updated release integrates the distinctive two-seat configuration and a vibrant U.S. Navy paint scheme that honors the aircraft’s revered background as a crucial primary trainer.
Historical Insights on the Trainer
The Fairchild PT-26, produced during the early 1940s, was pivotal in preparing thousands of rookie pilots in the United States and Canada. Fleet Aircraft, Ltd. joined Fairchild in delivering more than 1,700 airframes, each fitted with a Ranger air-cooled, in-line engine. This setup provided balanced thrust and dependable performance, making it an ideal platform for foundational training. Students quickly learned essential flight procedures, navigation, and aerobatic maneuvers in these single-engine trainers, ensuring combat-readiness for war deployments. Mark Rooks of RDG Aircraft has meticulously applied period-accurate U.S. Navy markings to this model, paying homage to the real-world livery that once graced active-duty trainers.
Key Technical Features
Enthusiasts will notice a fully functional 2D cockpit layout and a detailed 3D panel that captures the look of the era. Included materials showcase historical context, accompanied by additional imagery of the PT-26 in its iconic form. These enhancements combine to supply a rich simulation environment, letting virtual pilots appreciate the nuances of a WWII trainer inside the modern simulator platform.
Installation Procedure
- Unzip the downloaded archive into a temporary directory, ensuring all contents (including textures and gauges) fully extract.
- Locate the folder labeled PT-26 U.S. NAVY and copy it directly into your main aircraft folder. For most setups, this folder is found at: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FSX\SimObjects\Airplanes.
- Confirm that the primary folder now contains six essential items: CFG, Airfile, Model, Sound, Panel, and Texture. All six must reside together for proper integration in Microsoft Flight Simulator X.
- Place any included gauge files into the Gauges directory of FSX, which typically appears under C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FSX\Gauges.
Additional Notes from the Author
Mark “Fire Ball” Rooks, responsible for these creative modifications and textures, has simplified the aircraft’s adaptation for FSX while retaining the authenticity of the original design. Explore the richly detailed cockpit, enjoy the historically accurate navy markings, and immerse yourself in the flight characteristics reminiscent of a vintage advanced trainer.
All credit goes to J.E. Narcizo for the original model and Mark Rooks of RDG Aircraft for the thorough conversion work and visual enhancements. Enjoy your new repaint!
