Experience the distinctive 1960s appeal of the Malayan Airlines Bristol Britannia with this meticulously crafted repaint package. These textures depict the aircraft during a period when Malayan Airlines (later evolving into Malaysia Airlines) leased a number of Britannias from BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation). This add-on is designed for Microsoft Flight Simulator X and is provided completely free. You will need to download the freeware Bristol Britannia base model, which is available in the Fly Away Simulation library.
Technical Notes on the Aircraft
The Bristol Britannia was a pioneering turboprop airliner designed with extended range capabilities. Its efficient propeller-turbine configuration allowed reliable transoceanic operations. This particular propliner boasted notable fuel economy for its time, making it a favored choice for many carriers. Malayan Airlines, recognizing these advantages, leased a few Britannias from BOAC in order to support expanding routes across Southeast Asia. Their unique paintwork combined local design elements with the signature elements of British aeronautical engineering.
Features of This Repaint
- Authentic Markings: Reproduces the 1960s Malayan Airlines insignia, which differs from the modern airline branding seen today.
- Historic Accuracy: Reflects the period-specific livery details when the Britannia fleet was operated on lease from BOAC.
- Enhanced Textures: Contains optimized external textures that align with the professional quality of this model by Jens B. Kristensen.
Installation Procedure
Before proceeding, confirm that the main JBK Britannia package (file name Brt_V10X.zip
) is already installed. Once that is in place, follow these steps to integrate the new textures:
- In your main “JBK Britannia” folder, create or locate the texture.malayan subfolder if it does not already exist. If needed, manually add it to hold the new texture files.
- Copy the supplied texture.malayan folder into the same directory where the other JBK Britannia liveries reside.
- Then, open the texture.shared folder (found inside the JBK Britannia directory) and copy both steel_t.dds and steel_L.dds to the relevant subfolder in “JBK Britannia” to ensure the livery has access to all required shared textures.
- Locate and open the aircraft.cfg file within the JBK Britannia folder. Insert the following lines at the bottom of the existing [fltsim.xxx] entries, making sure to replace "xx" with the appropriate consecutive number:
[fltsim.xx] title=JBK Britannia Malayan sim=JBK Britannia model= panel= sound= texture=malayan kb_checklists= kb_reference=britannia_ref atc_id=G-ANBF ui_manufacturer=Bristol ui_type=Britannia (JBK) ui_variation=Malayan Airways srs 102 atc_heavy=0 atc_airline=Malaysian atc_flight_number=1960 description=Bristol Britannia 102, on lease from BOAC to Malayan Airways. ui_typerole="Propliner" ui_createdby="JBK"
Additional Considerations
This repaint snapshot represents a fascinating segment of aviation history, capturing the era when Malayan Airlines was solidifying its identity. The Britannia emerged as a favorite among long-haul operators due to its robust turboprop design and smooth performance on regional routes. Enthusiasts and historians will appreciate not only the exterior textures but also the historical significance associated with these aircraft.
Developer Acknowledgments
The repaint has been masterfully created by Jens B. Kristensen. His dedication to preserving classic airliners in flight simulators is evident in the texture detailing and overall realism. If you enjoy immersing yourself in retro air travel, this freeware addition to Microsoft Flight Simulator X will complement the existing JBK Britannia base pack nicely. Remember to obtain the base model from the Fly Away Simulation library to ensure full functionality.
