Flight Simulator X Prepar3D

This freeware package provides a distinct livery for the Boeing 737-800 in Microsoft Flight Simulator X, showcasing South African Airways colors as crafted by developer Felix Prüfer. It recreates intricate details of the carrier’s branding while retaining the core features of the default FSX airliner model. Flight simulation enthusiasts can expect a faithful representation of the full-size jet’s unmistakable tail emblem and vibrant fuselage scheme.

Livery Complexity and Visual Elements

This repaint accurately reproduces the South African Airways insignia on the vertical stabilizer and introduces a precise color palette along the aircraft’s fuselage. The reflective surfaces are preserved to simulate realistic light behavior, enhancing visual immersion. Internal cockpit views remain consistent with the original default Boeing 737-800 to maintain authenticity.

South African Airways Significance

South African Airways—a national flagship carrier founded in the 1930s—has historically operated a diverse fleet, including variants of the Boeing 737 series. Known for extensive routes across Africa and beyond, the airline has cultivated prominence in both regional and international aviation markets. This texture pack celebrates SAA’s prominent status, giving virtual pilots the chance to experience a classic domestic and cross-border workhorse.

Incorporating into Microsoft Flight Simulator X

Preparation

Please confirm you have the default Boeing 737-800 installed. If needed, the original freeware base model is available in the Fly Away Simulation library. Installation of this repaint requires basic familiarity with the FSX directory structure.

Installation Steps

  1. Unzip and place the Texture.saa folder into the following path within your FSX installation: SimObjects > Airplanes > B737_800.
  2. Open aircraft.cfg located in the above directory using a text editor.
  3. Add the repaint entry below. Replace [fltsim.x] with the next available sequence (e.g., [fltsim.9]) to avoid any numbering conflicts.

description=One should hardly be surprised that the world's most prolific manufacturer of commercial aircraft is also the producer of the world's most popular jetliner. The 737 became the best-selling commercial jetliner worldwide when orders for it hit 1,831 in June 1987 (surpassing Boeing's own 727 as the previous champ). However, it wasn't always that ways in the first few years of production, there were so few orders that Boeing considered canceling the program. They didn't, and the airplane has more than proven itself in over three decades of service.

Important Considerations

  • This repaint solely includes the texture files and depends on the default Boeing 737-800 model (created by Microsoft Corporation) present in FSX.
  • Ensure you keep a backup of your aircraft.cfg in case you need to revert changes.

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D aircraft
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Copy aircraft files into SimObjects

Place the aircraft folder inside FSX\SimObjects\Airplanes\. The folder must contain an aircraft.cfg file. Effects go into FSX\Effects\; gauges go into FSX\Gauges\.
  3. Verify in FSX

Launch FSX, go to Free Flight → Select Aircraft and find your new aircraft under its manufacturer.
  4. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.
