How do I change cockpit and external views in FS2004?

Ian Stephens
In short

Learn how to change views in FS2004 using S, W, the keypad and zoom keys, open extra windows, and fix cockpit or external camera problems.

In Microsoft FS2004 (FS9), press S to cycle between the 2D cockpit, virtual cockpit, tower, spot and top-down views; press Shift+S to go backwards. Use W for 2D panel layouts, the numeric keypad or joystick hat to look around, and the equals and minus keys to adjust zoom.

FS2004 view controls at a glance

The default keyboard controls let you change the main view, look through side windows and adjust each camera without opening a menu.

Press Alt if the menu bar is hidden, then use the Views menu when you want to select a named view directly. Our complete FS2004 keyboard-command reference also covers the eyepoint and view-window assignments.

How do I look through the side windows?

In a 2D cockpit, use the numeric keypad with Num Lock off, or move the joystick hat towards the required direction. The available images vary by aircraft: some panels provide detailed side-window bitmaps, while others show a simpler outside view.

In the virtual cockpit, the same controls move your viewpoint around the modelled interior. A view command cannot create a virtual cabin, wing position or rear compartment that the aircraft developer did not include.

Do not confuse directional views with instrument-panel windows. The top-row shortcuts Shift+1 through Shift+9 toggle panel windows defined in that aircraft's panel.cfg; the main panel is normally Shift+1, but radio, GPS and overhead-window numbers vary. Open Views > Instrument Panel to see the windows actually supplied with the selected aircraft.

Which external view should I use?

Use Spot Plane for a movable tracking camera, Tower for a fixed ground viewpoint, and Top-down for airport orientation.

  • Spot Plane: best for inspecting the aircraft, watching control surfaces and taking exterior screenshots. Use the keypad or hat switch to change the angle and the zoom keys to alter distance.
  • Tower: follows the aircraft from a fixed ground location, making it suitable for departures, approaches and fly-pasts.
  • Top-down: provides an overhead view useful for checking taxi position and airport layout rather than cinematic flying.

Press S until the required mode appears, or select it from the Views menu. Zoom is applied to the active view, so click inside a secondary window before changing its magnification.

How do I open a second view window in FS2004?

FS2004 can display another cockpit or external camera in a separate, resizable view window.

  1. Display the menu bar: press Alt if it is not visible.
  2. Create the window: open Views > New View and select the cockpit or external view you want.
  3. Activate it: click inside the new window before changing its direction, mode or zoom.
  4. Position it: resize it within FS2004, or use the window's undock command if you want to move it onto another display.

Every additional window requires FS2004 to render another view of the scene, so a noticeable frame-rate reduction is normal. Close unused views rather than leaving several small camera windows running.

Why are the FS2004 view controls not working?

Most failed view commands are caused by Num Lock, reassigned keys, the wrong active window or an aircraft that lacks the requested interior view.

  • The numeric keypad does nothing: switch Num Lock off and use the keypad rather than the top number row. Laptop users may need to enable an embedded keypad or assign the commands to a joystick hat.
  • S or W has no effect: click the main simulation view, close any open menu, and check the control assignments. Add-ons and custom profiles can replace the defaults.
  • A Shift-number panel will not open: that aircraft may not define a window in that position. Panel-window numbering is not universal between add-on aircraft.
  • The virtual cockpit or cabin is missing: the selected aircraft may contain only a 2D panel. Changing camera modes will not add unmodelled interior geometry.
  • A new window causes stuttering: reduce its size or close it. Multiple rendered views are particularly demanding on FS2004's older graphics engine.

Can I add mouse-look and better external cameras?

Yes, but choose a utility according to the camera control you need and install only versions made specifically for FS2004/FS9.

These are legacy FS2004 utilities and may install modules or configuration entries. Keep a backup, follow the package instructions, and add one camera utility at a time so any control conflict is easy to identify.
