Yes. FS2004 (FS9) can run from an external SSD if you install it there, keep the same Windows drive letter, and connect the drive before launching the simulator. A fresh installation is safer than copying the folder. Expect faster loading, but little or no frame-rate gain.
How should I install FS2004 on an external SSD?
Treat the SSD as a permanent installation drive rather than portable storage. FS2004 and many of its add-on installers record the installation path in the Windows Registry, so changing the drive letter later can break them.
- Connect the SSD directly. Use a reliable USB port rather than an unpowered hub, and leave the drive connected whenever FS2004 or an add-on installer is running.
- Assign a permanent drive letter. Use Windows Disk Management to select a letter unlikely to be taken by another USB device. A later letter such as
S:is usually easier to reserve thanD:orE:. - Install rather than copy. Run the FS2004 installer and choose a simple folder such as
S:\FS2004. Avoid installing underProgram Files, where modern Windows permissions can interfere with this older simulator and its add-ons. - Launch FS2004 once. This confirms that the simulator has created its user configuration and Registry entries before you install aircraft, scenery or utilities.

Can I copy an existing FS2004 installation to the SSD?
A copied FS2004 folder may launch, but copying alone does not update Registry entries, add-on paths or scenery-library references. The dependable method is to install the base simulator onto the SSD, patch it, launch it once, and then restore compatible add-on files.
Simple aircraft and scenery packages can often be transferred manually. Add-ons with their own installers, activation systems, modules or external configuration tools should be reinstalled to the new location. Scenery registered with an absolute path must be removed and added again through the Scenery Library if it still points to the old drive.
An external installation is also not fully portable between computers. Files such as FS9.cfg are stored in the Windows user profile, saved flights normally remain under the user's Documents folders, and required Registry entries stay on the computer. Connecting the SSD to another PC does not reproduce that supporting configuration.
Will an external SSD make FS2004 faster?
An SSD can shorten simulator, aircraft and scenery loading times, but FS2004's frame rate is usually limited by processor performance and demanding add-ons rather than storage speed.

A slow USB connection can limit the SSD, while a loose cable, sleeping drive or overloaded hub can cause pauses and crashes. Do not disconnect the SSD until FS2004 has closed completely.
Why will FS2004 not launch from the external SSD?
The usual causes are a changed drive letter, a copied installation with stale Registry data, Windows permissions, unsupported disc protection or an incompatible add-on.
- The drive letter changed: restore the original letter in Disk Management before starting FS2004.
- An installer cannot find FS9: reinstall the base simulator to the SSD so Windows records the correct path; moving only
FS9.exeis not enough. - FS2004 asks for the disc: an SSD does not remove the original SafeDisc check, which modern Windows versions do not support normally.
