How do I download and install DCS World on PC?
To download and install DCS World on PC, choose either standalone or Steam, obtain it through that route, run the installer, select an SSD with ample free space, and let it download the game files. Launch DCS World afterwards, allow any first-run components, then sign in if prompted.
Which DCS World version should you download?
Choose one distribution and use it for both the core simulator and its modules. Steam and standalone contain the same underlying simulator, but they use different installers, update systems and module-management routes.
| Edition | Best when | Key caution |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone | You want DCS World’s own updater and built-in module manager. | Standalone purchases generally do not appear in the Steam edition. |
| Steam | You prefer Steam to manage the download, updates and installation library. | Install the core simulator and associated content through Steam rather than mixing files from standalone. |
Some eligible Steam module licences can be linked for standalone use, but licence movement is not symmetrical and should never be assumed. Our comparison of the Steam and standalone editions explains the practical differences before you commit to a large download.
Older instructions may refer to separate release branches or branch-specific installers. Follow the choices presented by the installer you are using rather than creating another copy solely because an old guide names a different branch.
How much free space do you need before installation?
DCS World needs substantially more free space than the small web installer suggests. The installer is only a bootstrap program; it still has to download and unpack the simulator, while aircraft, terrain maps, campaigns, updates and temporary installation files add to the requirement.
Reserve extra headroom rather than planning around the base installation alone. Our breakdown of DCS World storage requirements covers the base simulator and the expansion caused by optional modules. An SSD is strongly preferable because DCS streams large terrain and texture files during loading and flight.
Before downloading, also compare your computer with the DCS World PC requirements. A successful installation does not guarantee acceptable performance, particularly with detailed maps, complex missions or virtual reality.
How to download and install DCS World
Use either the standalone procedure or the Steam procedure below, not both. Never point the two editions at the same installation folder.
Install the DCS World standalone edition
The standalone web installer is a small program that downloads the main DCS World files after it starts.
- Download the installer archive. Obtain it from our DCS World PC installer and extraction page, then save the archive to a local folder.
- Extract the complete archive. Do not run the installer from inside the compressed file. Extract all included files into an ordinary folder first.
- Run the web installer. Approve the Windows security prompt and select the destination folder. Choose an SSD with enough room for the core simulator, temporary files and future modules.
- Let the updater finish. Keep the PC awake and maintain the internet connection while the main payload is downloaded and unpacked. Accept any supporting Windows components offered by the installer.
- Launch DCS World. Allow the updater to apply any remaining core update, then sign in or create an account if requested. Permit network access through the Windows firewall if you intend to use multiplayer.
Install DCS World through Steam
The Steam edition should be installed and updated entirely inside Steam.
- Open Steam and locate DCS World. Add the free base simulator to your library if it is not already present.
- Select Install. Choose a Steam library on an SSD with sufficient free space.
- Wait for the download to complete. Steam handles the core files and subsequent file updates.
- Start DCS World from the library. Complete any first-run prompts and account linking presented by the simulator.
Do not run the standalone web installer over the Steam folder. Steam verifies and updates its own copy; the standalone edition relies on the DCS updater.
Can DCS World be installed on another drive?
Yes, DCS World can be installed on a secondary internal SSD by selecting that drive during installation. For Steam, choose the appropriate Steam library; for standalone, choose a custom destination before the main files are downloaded.
The installation folder is not the same as the user-data folder. Controls, screenshots, missions and many user settings are stored under %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\DCS; older branch-specific installations may use a slightly different DCS folder name. Do not select the Saved Games folder as the core installation destination.
If DCS is already installed, use Steam’s built-in storage-move function for the Steam edition. For standalone, reinstalling to the new location is safer than manually dragging folders unless you are prepared to correct shortcuts and run the supplied repair process afterwards. Back up the Saved Games folder before moving or reinstalling.
Why won’t DCS World install or launch?
Most DCS World installation failures come from an unextracted installer, insufficient working space, blocked updater access or a damaged partial download.
- The installer opens and immediately closes: extract the complete archive before running it. Check whether Windows security software quarantined part of the download; allow the trusted installer rather than disabling protection globally.
- The download stops or appears stuck: prevent the PC from sleeping, check the connection and restart the updater. It can normally inspect the existing files and continue rather than downloading everything again.
- The installer reports insufficient space: free additional room for both the installed files and temporary unpacking data, or select a larger SSD. The headline download size is not the only space required.
- DCS will not start after installation: restart Windows, finish any prerequisite installation, update the graphics driver and run the standalone repair tool or Steam’s file-verification function.
- Owned aircraft or maps are missing: confirm that you installed the edition associated with the purchase. Use the standalone Module Manager for standalone content and Steam’s content management for the Steam edition.
- An old copy keeps launching: inspect the shortcut and installation path. A common mistake is installing a second edition but continuing to use a shortcut pointing to the first copy.
What should happen after the first launch?
The core installation is working once DCS World reaches its main menu without requesting another core download. Install optional aircraft and maps only after this clean first launch, then configure each controller axis and command rather than assuming the default assignments are suitable.
The first load into a map or mission can take longer while DCS prepares shaders and cached data. That alone does not indicate a failed installation; repeated crashes, missing textures or file errors should be handled with the appropriate repair or verification function.
