MSFS Ålesund Vigra Airport (ENAL)

Ålesund Vigra Airport (ENAL) scenery recreates Norway’s exposed island gateway in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, with custom buildings, AIP-based lighting and markings, and distinctive runway elevations. A detailed terminal, tower interior, seasonal lights, nearby bridges and landmarks, refined coastal terrain, expanded parking and an included GSX profile enrich approaches and ground operations.

Expert Overview

I installed Ålesund Vigra in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and flew an approach before exploring the apron. The runway’s changing elevation stood out on arrival, giving the airfield a character that goes beyond its buildings. During taxi, I found the custom blue edge lights and revised apron markings useful visual references. The relatively simple building models gain character from weathering and the terminal’s revised metal-panel materials.

I also appreciated the scenery’s reach beyond the perimeter, with Vigra Church and the nearby bridges providing local reference points. An included GSX profile and extra general aviation stands broaden its ground-handling scope. The release notes still describe gate-flicker reduction and AI taxiway use as work in progress, so I would not treat either as fully resolved.

This freeware Ålesund Vigra Airport (ENAL) scenery brings custom airport buildings, AIP-based airfield details and an included GSX profile to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. It covers the exposed island airport and nearby landmarks, with version 1.30 adding replacement streetlight models and further texture improvements.

Vigra’s Island Setting and Runway Profile

Vigra serves Ålesund and the Sunnmøre district on Norway’s west coast. Its island location leaves the airfield exposed to strong Atlantic winds, while the runway’s distinctive elevation profile gives approaches another local characteristic. Alongside domestic services, the developer’s description lists international connections to Alicante, Copenhagen, Kaunas, Amsterdam and Gdańsk; these describe the airport’s route network rather than an included traffic schedule.

The scenery uses custom-built, relatively simple models alongside runway lighting and taxiway markings that follow the AIP [Aeronautical Information Publication]. Updates have refined the runway elevations, terminal materials, apron layout and surrounding terrain rather than concentrating solely on the main buildings.

Airfield Layout, Lighting and Ground Operations

  • Runway geometry and surfaces: Revisions refine the runway profile with more accurate elevation values, flatten the runway 24 turnpad and correct its texture. Version 1.27 also attempts to reduce an unnatural runway bend and corrects several runway markings. Asphalt colour adjustments on the runway, taxiways and apron tune the appearance of snow coverage.
  • Approach and airfield lighting: Updates increase runway-light intensity, adjust amber light colours, add stop bars and introduce custom blue taxiway-edge lights. Work at the runway 24 end lowers the approach lights, adds pier detail and, in version 1.28, removes incorrect approach lights. Curved GP [glide-path] antenna models replace the earlier antennas.
  • Taxiway and apron markings: The package adds a missing apron taxiway, corrects taxiway names and links, revises pedestrian walkways, and supplies white apron markings. Red ground markings receive replacement textures and later adjustments for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. RWY AHEAD markings receive both tonal changes and a higher-resolution replacement.
  • Signs and line placement: Revisions reposition signs against imagery, add missing apron signs and the holding-point A sign, and redesign apron signage. The version 1.5 notes also record a taxiway-line adjustment to approximately 0.9 m from the runway centreline.
  • AI routing and parking: Taxiway changes direct AI departures to the runway threshold. Later taxiway-name work aims to encourage traffic to use all taxiways, although the developer marks that work as ongoing. Additional GA [general aviation] stands expand parking, while main-apron positions carry the airline codes SAS, WIF, NAX, KLM, WZZ and SRN. An earlier update removes static aircraft.
  • Navigation tuning: The scenery adds the VGR IDME entry on 111.95 to address an autotuning issue.
  • GSX support: An included profile accompanies asset-placement changes that make room for GSX ground-service vehicles.

Terminal, Tower and Nearby Landmarks

The terminal receives successive detail and texture passes, including metallic and roughness adjustments to its metal panels. Later revisions add building weathering and further terminal detail, while version 1.26 introduces a tower interior and adjusts the tower window glass. Seasonal Christmas lights appear on the tower during December only.

Elsewhere on the airport, updates correct hangar geometry, revise the Lufttransport hangar and utility building, tune barrack windows, replace the fire-training model and fix a missing roof texture. The developer also adds parking-area garages, car-park details, roads and further parking spaces. Lightmast work covers the hangar area, additional mast detail and rebuilt older masts; version 1.30 replaces default Asobo streetlights with scenery-object lightmasts.

  • Local reference points: Giske Bridge, Lepsøy Bridge, Vigra Church and models on Gamlemsveten Peak extend the scenery beyond the airport boundary. Lepsøy Bridge also gains light points.
  • Airport perimeter and waterfront: Additions include perimeter fencing and a rescue boat, followed by a replacement SAR [search and rescue] boat model.
  • Vegetation and approach scenery: Updates lower trees near the airport and remove selected trees from surrounding islands. Further changes remove tall trees and inappropriate high-rise buildings on the runway 06 approach, adjust nearby house LODs and add streetlights.
  • Model display and object conflicts: LODs [levels of detail, which change model complexity with viewing distance] cover buildings and other models, with subsequent fixes to their transitions. Other revisions improve model textures, remove objects that conflict with the We Love VFR1 add-on and eliminate a duplicate church.
  • Water and terrain cleanup: Corrections remove water spikes near the runway 24 approach and repair the water exclusion at that runway end.

Version 1.30 and Simulator-Specific Notes

The supplied release history identifies version 1.30, dated 5 April 2026, as the current release. Its changes replace default streetlights with scenery lightmasts and improve several textures. The project’s listed updates run from the initial version 1.1 release on 29 January 2023 through this build.

For Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, version 1.16 corrects the display of some markings, and version 1.18 fixes the taxiway terrain bumps noted in earlier releases. The developer reports that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 did not show those bumps.

Two other update details matter when checking the package’s scope:

  • ENAX Ålesund Hospital Heliport: Version 1.21 adds the heliport, but version 1.29 removes the ENAX helipad. Do not expect that earlier addition in the current package.
  • Gate flicker: Versions 1.24 and 1.25 attempt to reduce flashing or flickering gates. The notes describe an improvement rather than a confirmed complete fix.

Creator credit: The supplied description does not identify the scenery’s author or development team by name.
