How do I use a keyboard and mouse in MSFS 2024 on Xbox?

Ian Stephens
In short

Set up a keyboard and mouse for MSFS 2024 on Xbox, choose control profiles, use cockpit switches, and fix missing devices or input conflicts.

Connect a wired USB keyboard and mouse, or wireless models that use standard USB receivers, to your Xbox Series X|S before launching Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. The sim should detect each device separately. Select populated default profiles, test the cockpit pointer, and customise only the commands you need.

How do I set up the keyboard and mouse?

Use direct USB connections for the initial setup, then confirm that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 has assigned a working profile to each device.

  1. Connect both devices before launching the sim. Plug them directly into the Xbox where possible. Wireless models need a USB receiver that operates as a standard keyboard or mouse; Xbox consoles do not pair with ordinary Bluetooth keyboards and mice.
  2. Keep the Xbox controller available. It remains useful for Xbox system screens, dialogue boxes and analogue flight control, even if you intend to operate the cockpit with a mouse and keyboard.
  3. Open the Controls screen. From the simulator's settings, choose Controls and look for separate entries for the keyboard and mouse. Their appearance confirms that the sim has detected them.
  4. Select a populated preset. Choose the supplied default profile for each device rather than an empty profile. If you are unsure what should already be assigned, use our reference to the standard keyboard commands and restoring the Keyboard preset.
  5. Test the controls while parked. Move the mouse over a cockpit switch, operate it, test camera movement and try a harmless keyboard command. Our cockpit pointer and interaction-mode fixes cover cases where the cursor appears but cannot operate a knob or switch.
  6. Create a custom profile for changes. Duplicate the working preset instead of clearing or heavily editing it. Follow the steps for building a clean custom keyboard profile if you want different shortcuts.

What should I use each device for?

The most practical Xbox arrangement uses the mouse for cockpit interaction, the keyboard for commands and the controller or a flight peripheral for analogue flying.

DeviceBest useMain limitation
KeyboardViews, aircraft systems, pause functions, text entry and commands used regularlyPitch, roll and steering keys provide digital rather than progressive input
MouseMenus, cockpit switches, knobs, displays and pointer interactionLess suitable than an analogue device for precise hand-flying
Xbox controllerPitch, roll, rudder, brakes and Xbox interface controlCan create duplicate inputs if the same axes are also assigned elsewhere

A mistake we see constantly is assigning every available command immediately. Start with the defaults, then add only the functions you genuinely use. This makes conflicts much easier to identify.

Can keyboard and mouse replace the Xbox controller?

A keyboard and mouse can control most simulator menus and aircraft functions, but we recommend retaining the controller for analogue flight inputs and occasional Xbox interface screens.

Keyboard flight commands apply stepped or sustained inputs, so small corrections during take-off, landing and formation flying are harder to judge. A controller, yoke or joystick provides proportional movement. The mouse is primarily a pointer and camera device rather than a substitute for an aircraft control column.

These instructions assume the native Xbox Series X|S version. In a cloud-streamed session, keyboard and mouse support depends on whether the client passes those devices through to the game; use a controller if the session exposes controller input only.

Why is my keyboard or mouse not working?

Most failures come from an unrecognised USB device, an empty control profile or conflicting assignments rather than a fault in the simulator.

  • The device is missing from Controls: quit Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 fully, reconnect the device directly to another USB port and relaunch. Remove an unpowered hub while testing.
  • A wireless device is not detected: use its USB receiver rather than Bluetooth. Hardware that depends on Windows-only drivers or configuration software may expose only basic functions, or may not work on Xbox.
  • The device appears but does nothing: check that its active profile contains assignments. Switching accidentally to a blank profile is a common cause.
  • The mouse works in menus but not in the cockpit: restore the default Mouse profile and check the cockpit interaction or pointer mode. Also ensure another device has not taken over camera or cursor control.
  • The aircraft moves without being commanded: inspect bindings for duplicate pitch, roll, rudder, throttle, brake and camera axes. Clear the unwanted assignment from one device rather than increasing dead zones blindly.
  • Inputs stopped working after resuming: save the flight if possible, close the simulator completely and restart it with both USB devices already connected.
