MSFS 2024 on Xbox vs PC: which should you choose?

Compare MSFS 2024 on Xbox vs PC for performance, add-ons, controls, VR and cost, then choose the right platform and Xbox model.

Choose Xbox Series X|S for the simplest, fixed-cost way to run Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024; choose PC for better upgrade potential, VR, wider peripheral support, external utilities and add-ons installed outside the Marketplace. Series X is the stronger console choice, while Series S suits buyers who accept more visual and performance compromises.

MSFS 2024 Xbox vs PC comparison

The choice comes down to convenience on Xbox versus flexibility on PC, not a different flight model.

Is MSFS 2024 the same simulator on Xbox and PC?

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 has the same underlying simulator, world and first-party edition content on Xbox Series X|S and PC. PC and Xbox pilots can also share the multiplayer environment when their online and multiplayer settings permit it.

The meaningful differences sit around the simulator: graphics headroom, peripheral support, VR, local file access and add-on availability. An add-on that needs a separate installer, background application or direct file access will not work on Xbox, even if the aircraft type itself exists there.

Should you choose Xbox Series X or Series S?

Series X is the safer Xbox choice for MSFS 2024, particularly for detailed airports, complex airliners and busy photogrammetry areas. Its additional hardware headroom gives the simulator more room before visual reductions, asset loading and stutters become conspicuous.

Series S remains a valid lower-cost entry point, but expect greater compromises in image quality, world detail and demanding scenes. A mistake we see constantly is treating both Xbox models as one performance tier; they run the same simulator, but they do not provide the same experience.

Neither console can later receive a faster processor, graphics card or more system memory. Extra storage expands capacity, not performance.

Who should choose PC or Xbox?

Choose PC for an expandable simulation setup

PC is the better long-term platform if you expect to add VR, detailed freeware, external flight-planning or ATC tools, hardware panels, several displays or specialist flight controls. It also allows much deeper graphics tuning and future component upgrades.

A PC is not automatically faster because it is a PC. A modest or poorly balanced system can perform worse than Series X, especially when limited by its processor in dense airports. Compare your proposed machine with our practical hardware guidance for running Microsoft Flight Simulator before assuming the computer option is superior.

Choose Xbox for predictable cost and simpler ownership

Xbox is the better fit when you want to install the simulator, use a television or monitor and fly without managing graphics drivers or Windows background tasks. Series X offers the best plug-in-and-fly console experience; Series S prioritises purchase price and compact size.

An Xbox controller is usable for casual flying, but analogue sticks and shared button combinations become restrictive in complex aircraft. Keyboard and mouse improve cockpit operation, while a console-compatible stick, throttle or yoke improves aircraft control. Our comparison of controller, joystick, HOTAS and yoke options for MSFS explains which control type suits each style of flying.

Do not assume an ordinary PC USB peripheral will work on Xbox. The device must explicitly support Xbox, and some advanced functions may still depend on the simulator's available bindings.

What add-ons can Xbox and PC use?

Xbox users can install only add-ons released through the in-simulator Marketplace and approved for console. There is no accessible Community folder, and files downloaded with a web browser cannot be copied into the Xbox installation.

PC users can combine Marketplace products with manually installed aircraft, scenery and liveries, plus applications that communicate with the simulator externally. This is the decisive difference for anyone building a large or specialised add-on collection. Our explanation of Marketplace purchases versus external PC add-ons covers the practical trade-offs.

Check the supported-platform label before buying any add-on. Availability on PC does not guarantee an Xbox release, and a product requiring an external executable cannot be made console-compatible merely by copying its files.

Can one MSFS 2024 purchase cover Xbox and PC?

A digital copy explicitly sold with Xbox Play Anywhere can provide access on Xbox and Windows PC through the same Microsoft account. A Steam licence is a separate PC purchase and does not grant an Xbox copy.

Do not assume every add-on entitlement transfers with the base simulator. Cross-platform access depends on how the product was purchased and whether that add-on is published for both platforms. External PC purchases and manually installed freeware cannot transfer to Xbox.

Does either platform need less internet bandwidth?

Neither platform removes MSFS 2024's dependence on internet-connected world streaming. Xbox and PC both download scenery, weather and online-service data during use, while an offline session provides a more limited world experience.

A wired connection is preferable where practical, but changing platform will not cure slow broadband, packet loss or a restrictive data cap. See our breakdown of MSFS 2024 streaming data use and bandwidth controls if network capacity is part of the decision.

Which MSFS 2024 version is the best overall choice?

Choose PC if add-ons, VR, specialist controls, external utilities or future upgrades matter. Choose Xbox Series X if you want strong console performance with minimal configuration. Choose Series S only when lower cost and compact hardware outweigh the visual and performance compromises.

For a simmer likely to expand the setup over several years, PC provides the most freedom. For straightforward flying from a sofa or desk without maintaining a gaming computer, Series X is usually the best-balanced alternative.
