Why is MSFS 2024 on Steam stuck connecting to Xbox?

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 (MSFS 2024) on Steam usually hangs at “Connecting to Xbox Network” because Microsoft/Xbox authentication has stalled, not because Steam cannot verify the purchase. Restart the sign-in chain, confirm the Microsoft account in the Xbox app, update Gaming Services, then rule out an Xbox service or network outage.

Why does the Steam version need Xbox Network?

Steam supplies the MSFS 2024 licence, but Microsoft still supplies the simulator’s Xbox identity and online services. Your gamertag, cloud profile, multiplayer access and Marketplace account therefore require a Microsoft/Xbox sign-in even though the game was bought through Steam.

The Steam and Microsoft account email addresses do not need to match, and you do not need Game Pass or an Xbox console. Common causes of the connection stall include:

• An expired or damaged Xbox authentication token.
• The Xbox app and Microsoft Store using conflicting accounts.
• A Microsoft sign-in or consent window hidden behind the simulator.
• Outdated or damaged Xbox app or Gaming Services components.
• An incorrect Windows clock, VPN, firewall or filtered network connection.
• A pending Steam, Microsoft Store or simulator update.
• A temporary Xbox Network service interruption.

How do I fix Connecting to Xbox Network on Steam?

Work through these checks in order; reinstalling the simulator first usually wastes time because most connection stalls occur outside its main content files.

1. Rule out a service interruption. Confirm that Steam is online and not in Offline Mode, then check whether Xbox Network services are reporting an incident. If other Xbox-connected games or the Xbox app also fail, wait for the service to recover rather than changing MSFS files.
2. Restart the entire sign-in chain. Close MSFS 2024, exit Steam and quit the Xbox app rather than merely minimising them. Restart Windows, open the Xbox app first, confirm that your profile and gamertag load, then start Steam and launch MSFS normally.
3. Refresh the correct Microsoft account. Sign out of the Xbox app and sign back into the account you want to use in MSFS. While diagnosing the fault, use that account in the Microsoft Store as well; Windows permits separate Store and Xbox accounts, but aligning them removes a common source of conflicting tokens.
4. Look for a hidden login window. Press Alt+Tab and inspect the taskbar for a Microsoft account, Xbox or consent prompt sitting behind the simulator. 5. Update every layer. Install the pending MSFS 2024 update in Steam, update the Xbox app and Gaming Services through the Microsoft Store Library, and apply any waiting Windows updates and restarts. 6. Repair Xbox components. In Windows Settings, open Apps and locate the Xbox app and Gaming Services. Use Advanced options and choose Repair where that control is available. Restart Windows afterwards; use Reset only if Repair fails, because Reset signs the app out and clears its local data.
7. Check the clock and network. Set Windows date, time and time zone automatically, then use the system’s Sync now control. Temporarily disconnect VPNs, proxies and network-filtering tools, restart the router, and make sure the firewall allows Steam, MSFS, the Xbox app and Gaming Services. Do not leave security software disabled permanently.
8. Test a different connection. A brief phone-hotspot test can separate a PC or account fault from a router, DNS or ISP-filtering problem. Use it only long enough to pass authentication because MSFS can consume substantial data once scenery streaming begins. 9. Verify the Steam installation. In the Steam Library, open MSFS 2024 Properties, select Installed Files and run Verify integrity of game files. This repairs Steam-managed files, but it does not necessarily replace a damaged Xbox token or every simulator content package.

Which Microsoft account should I use with Steam?

Use the Microsoft account whose Xbox gamertag, cloud profile and Marketplace history you intend to keep. Steam owns the PC licence, while the Microsoft account provides the in-simulator Xbox identity, so the two accounts may use completely different email addresses.

A mistake we see constantly is creating a throwaway Microsoft account because its address matches Steam more closely. That is unnecessary. If you have already used MSFS with an established Xbox profile, sign into that profile unless you deliberately want a separate simulator identity.

Should I verify files or reinstall MSFS 2024?

Verify Steam files after the account, service and update checks; reinstall the whole simulator only after verification and Windows Xbox repairs fail. A full reinstall is unlikely to fix an expired account token, an Xbox outage or a blocked authentication request.

Do not delete the Community folder or downloaded aircraft merely because the simulator stops before Xbox authentication. Add-on conflicts generally appear later in the loading process. If the Xbox app itself cannot display your profile, concentrate on the account, Gaming Services and Windows network layer rather than reinstalling MSFS.
