Compare Steam vs PS5 for price, performance, libraries, mods, online play and flight-sim hardware, then choose the platform that fits.
Choose Steam on a Windows gaming PC for the widest library, mods, specialist simulation hardware and scalable performance. Choose PS5 for simpler setup, predictable console performance, disc support on compatible models and straightforward living-room play. For serious flight or train simulation, Steam is usually the stronger choice.
Steam vs PS5 at a glance
Steam is the flexible, higher-ceiling option; PS5 is the simpler, fixed-configuration option.
This is a general gaming-platform comparison rather than a direct hardware match. Steam is a digital store and library service, so performance depends entirely on the PC running it. We assume a Windows gaming PC here because many simulators and peripheral drivers target Windows. A Steam Deck is a separate proposition built around portability and lower-power hardware.
| Consideration | Steam on gaming PC | PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Requires PC configuration, drivers and graphics settings | Standardised installation and automatic console optimisation |
| Performance | Ranges from below PS5 to substantially above it | Predictable targets for each PS5 model |
| Game library | Very broad, including many PC-only simulators and strategy games | Smaller catalogue with PlayStation exclusives |
| Mods and add-ons | Steam Workshop and manual add-ons where supported | Only game-approved or in-game distribution channels |
| Online multiplayer | No general Steam multiplayer subscription; individual games may charge | Most paid-game multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus; free-to-play exceptions exist |
| Controllers and simulation hardware | Broad choice, subject to drivers and individual game support | Requires explicit console and game compatibility |
| Physical games | Steam purchases are digital | Discs are possible with an appropriate drive-equipped PS5 |
| VR | Several PC VR ecosystems, with support varying by game | PSVR2 support is specific to each game |
Which is cheaper: Steam or PS5?
PS5 usually has the lower and more predictable initial hardware cost, while Steam can cost less over time if you already own a capable PC and buy games during sales.
Steam does not impose a platform-wide fee for online multiplayer, although a particular game can still require its own subscription. On PS5, online play in most purchased games requires PlayStation Plus. That recurring cost matters if multiplayer is central to your choice.
A drive-equipped PS5 can also use eligible pre-owned or resold physical games. Steam licences cannot be resold, but its regular sales and larger back catalogue can reduce software costs. Compare the complete setup—including display, storage, controls, subscriptions and any planned PC upgrades—not just the console and computer prices.
Which is better for flight and train simulation?
Steam on Windows is generally better for dedicated flight and train simulation because it offers more specialist titles, broader hardware support and fewer restrictions on add-ons.
- Simulator availability: advanced titles do not always reach consoles. Our platform breakdown explains why DCS World remains a PC-only choice, while the same limitation affects Train Simulator Classic outside PC.
- Controls: Windows supports a wider range of yokes, throttles, rudder pedals, HOTAS systems, head trackers and button panels. On PS5, both the accessory and the game must explicitly support each other; a USB connector alone proves nothing.
- Mods and add-ons: PC simulators can support manually installed aircraft, scenery, routes, repaints and utilities. PS5 software is limited to the distribution methods approved by the game and platform. For Microsoft Flight Simulator, see how the Marketplace affects add-on freedom.
- Displays and performance: a suitable PC can provide ultrawide, multi-monitor, high-refresh or demanding VR configurations. PS5 is easier to configure but offers fewer display and graphics choices.
PS5 is no longer excluded from Microsoft Flight Simulator. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 launched on PS5 and PS5 Pro on 8 December 2025, becoming the first Flight Simulator released for PlayStation; PSVR2 support comes through a free 2026 update. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 never came to PlayStation, so do not assume its guides, editions or add-ons apply to the PS5 release. Our overview shows which flight simulators are genuinely worth considering on PS5.
Can you move Steam games and saves to PS5?
Steam purchases, DLC and save files do not normally transfer to PS5 unless the game publisher explicitly provides cross-progression or cross-entitlement.
Cross-play only means players on different platforms can play together; it does not guarantee shared saves, purchases, virtual currency or add-ons. Check each game separately before changing platforms, especially if you already own substantial DLC. Even when account-based progress transfers, another copy of the game may still be required.
Avoid these common Steam vs PS5 buying mistakes
The costliest mistakes come from treating every PC, peripheral and game edition as interchangeable.
- Comparing PS5 with “Steam performance”: Steam has no fixed performance level. Check the processor, graphics card, memory and cooling of the actual PC, not merely whether it can install Steam.
- Buying to minimum requirements: minimum PC specifications may target reduced settings, resolution or frame rate. Judge the machine against your intended display and the recommended specification.
- Assuming a controller will work: a HOTAS or steering controller that works on Windows may not work on PS5. Console approval and support inside the chosen game are both required.
- Expecting identical editions: mod support, downloadable content, VR features, multiplayer populations and update timing can differ between PC and PS5 versions.
Which platform should you choose?
Choose PS5 for convenience and Steam on PC for flexibility, unless a must-have game or peripheral settles the decision first.
- Choose Steam if you want PC-only games, mods, specialist simulation controls, extensive graphics settings, ultrawide or multi-monitor support, or the option to upgrade performance later.
- Choose PS5 if you want a fixed hardware budget, quick living-room setup, DualSense features, physical games on a compatible model or PlayStation exclusives.
- Stay with your existing ecosystem if your preferred games exist on both and you already have a large library, compatible controls or an established multiplayer group there.
If both platforms satisfy your game list, PS5 is the cleaner appliance-style purchase. Steam on a suitable Windows PC demands more setup and maintenance, but it remains the stronger long-term platform for mods, niche games and serious simulation hardware.
