How do I use keyboard controls in Train Sim World?

Learn Train Sim World keyboard controls, remap shortcuts and fix unresponsive keys with a practical PC cheat sheet and locomotive-specific caveats.

In Train Sim World on PC, use W/S for the reverser, A/D for the power or master controller, Space for the horn and Q to acknowledge safety warnings. Brake and door bindings vary more between locomotives and keyboard layouts, so verify the in-game keyboard map before leaving the platform and remap any conflicts.

What are the default Train Sim World keyboard controls?

The defaults below are the controls that remain most consistent across Train Sim World releases, but they are not a universal map for every locomotive.

FunctionCommon PC defaultHow it behaves
ReverserW / SMoves the reverser forwards or backwards through its available positions.
Power or master controllerA / DIncreases or decreases the selected handle by one notch. On a combined controller, decreasing through neutral may begin applying the brake.
Train brakeOften ; / 'Applies or releases the automatic train brake on many mappings. Check this carefully because punctuation keys differ by keyboard layout.
HornSpaceSounds the horn. Locomotives with separate high and low tones may have an additional binding.
Safety-system acknowledgementQAcknowledges systems such as AWS or an alerter when that equipment is enabled.
Emergency brakeBackspaceCommands an emergency application. Recovery requires the controls to be reset correctly; pressing the key again may not release it.
SanderXApplies sand where the train is fitted with sanding equipment.
BellBOperates the bell on locomotives that have one.
On-foot movement and interactionWASD and EMoves the character and operates highlighted controls. Once seated, A and D become driving inputs.
Pause or main menuEscPauses the session or opens the game menu.

Headlights, wipers, cab lighting, doors, cameras and separate locomotive or dynamic brakes are less consistent. Some commonly use letter or number shortcuts, while others depend on the train and control profile. The binding shown inside your installed game takes precedence over a printed shortcut list.

How should notched keyboard controls be used?

Tap the relevant key to move a notched handle one position at a time; hold it only when you deliberately want to pass through several positions.

With a combined power-and-brake controller, A usually moves towards higher power and D moves back towards idle, then into braking. On trains with separate controls, D stops at idle and the train, locomotive or dynamic brake needs its own shortcut.

Watch the HUD handle readout until you know the cab. Holding a key too long can take the controller from full power through neutral and directly into braking. The same care applies to the reverser: many trains lock it until power is at zero and the train is stationary or secured.

How do I change Train Sim World keyboard shortcuts?

Keyboard shortcuts can be reviewed and reassigned from the controls section of the settings menu.

  1. Open the settings menu. Pause the session with Esc, then open the controls or input settings. The exact menu wording differs between Train Sim World releases.
  2. Select the keyboard map. Make sure you are editing keyboard bindings rather than a controller layout.
  3. Check the driving essentials. Review the master controller, reverser, train brake, independent brake, dynamic brake, safety acknowledgement, doors and camera commands.
  4. Reassign conflicting keys. Choose an unused key and apply or save the change. Avoid assigning one key to two actions that can be active in the cab at the same time.
  5. Test at a standstill. Confirm each handle moves in the intended direction before beginning the service.

We recommend checking left- and right-door commands rather than memorising them from another locomotive. Releasing the wrong side is one of the easiest mistakes to make when copying an old key chart.

Why are my keyboard controls not working?

A non-responsive shortcut is usually caused by driving context, cab configuration, an interlock or the wrong keyboard profile rather than a faulty keyboard.

  • The handle moves but the train does not: this is normally a setup problem. Check the master key, reverser, brake state, charged brake pipe, closed doors and any active safety penalty. Our basic cab set-up and first-service guidance covers the wider starting sequence.
  • The reverser will not move: return the power controller to idle and secure the train. Some reversers are mechanically or electrically locked while traction is selected.
  • The alarm continues after pressing Q: the acknowledgement may have been late, causing a penalty brake application. Reset the power and brake controls as required by that train, then wait for the safety system to permit release.
  • A punctuation shortcut produces the wrong action: compare the physical key with the binding displayed in the game. UK, US and other keyboard layouts do not always place symbols on the same keys.
  • The keyboard map looks correct but a cab switch does nothing: some train-specific switches have no global shortcut and must be operated with the mouse.
  • A key changes the wrong control: remove duplicate assignments or restore the keyboard profile to its defaults, then remap one action at a time.

Can Train Sim World be played with only a keyboard?

Most routine driving can be performed from the keyboard, but a keyboard-and-mouse combination is more practical than keyboard alone.

The mouse is useful for master keys, circuit breakers, safety-system switches, radio equipment and other train-specific controls that lack universal shortcuts. It also makes camera movement and cab inspection much easier. A mistake we see constantly is assuming that every visible switch must have a keyboard command; many are deliberately operated directly in the cab.

Do PC keyboard controls work on consoles?

PC keyboard bindings should not be assumed to work identically on a console version of Train Sim World.

Keyboard support and the available actions can depend on the platform and Train Sim World release, so keep the controller available and check that version's input settings. Our guide to Train Sim World platform and console availability explains where the series can be played.
