Which button-box connection mode should I use?
Use direct controller binding when the simulator recognises arbitrary USB buttons; otherwise, keyboard emulation is usually the most compatible method.

A keyboard-mode box is a practical choice for doors, lights, wipers, the horn and safety acknowledgements. A direct USB controller is cleaner when the simulator accepts it, because its inputs do not type into search fields or other applications.
On a console, do not assume that a box will work simply because it has a USB connector. Generic HID devices are often unsupported unless the console and simulator explicitly recognise them as a compatible keyboard or controller.
How do I map a train simulator button box?
Test the hardware outside the simulator first, then assign one command at a time using either direct button binding or keyboard shortcuts.
- Identify the device mode. Check whether the box presents itself as a game controller, keyboard or specialist control panel. Some programmable units can switch between modes.
- Connect it directly. During setup, use a PC USB port rather than an unpowered hub. This removes hub power and device-enumeration problems from the diagnosis.
- Test every input in Windows. For a game-controller device, press
Win+R, enterjoy.cpl, select the device and open its test panel. Each press should activate one button and release cleanly. For a keyboard encoder, open a text editor and verify the keystrokes it sends. - Make a command plan. List the functions you use repeatedly and record their existing key assignments. - Bind or translate the inputs. If the simulator listens for generic controller buttons, select the desired command and press the box button. If it does not, program the box or an input-translation layer to send the corresponding keyboard shortcut. - Create separate profiles where necessary. Door controls, safety systems and combined power-brake commands can differ between locomotive families. One universal profile rarely covers every cab without compromises.
- Test while stationary. Check each control in a simple driving session, including what happens when it is released. Verify safety and emergency functions particularly carefully before normal driving.
Which train controls belong on a button box?
A button box works best for frequent on/off commands, while proportional power and brake controls are better assigned to analogue axes.

Momentary push-buttons are safest for commands expecting a brief press. A maintained toggle may continuously hold a key, causing repeated actions, and its physical position can disagree with the cab after loading a saved scenario. Use a toggle only when the interface sends a separate pulse on each transition or can synchronise its state with the simulator.
Why is my button box not working in the simulator?
Most button-box failures come from the wrong device mode, a held switch or a simulator that does not accept generic HID buttons.
- Windows cannot detect it: try another data-capable USB cable and a direct USB port. If it should be a game controller but does not appear in
joy.cpl, the problem is below the simulator level. - Windows detects it but the simulator does not: use keyboard emulation or an input-translation layer if the title lacks arbitrary controller binding. Also check whether another controller-management layer is masking or combining the device.
- A command repeats continuously: the switch is probably sending a held keystroke. Change it to momentary or pulse-on-change behaviour.
- The button works in menus but not in the cab: clear any text-entry field, check the active control profile and confirm that the locomotive uses the same command.
- Translated keys are ignored: ensure the simulator has input focus and avoid running it at a different Windows privilege level from the translation software.
- Bindings disappear or move: keep the box on the same USB port where practical and retain a written or exported copy of each profile.
- Switch lights do not follow the cab: ordinary input binding does not provide simulator feedback. Synchronised LEDs require supported output or telemetry integration.
A mistake we see constantly is diagnosing mappings inside the simulator before checking the raw Windows input. If a press does not register and release correctly at operating-system level, changing the in-game assignment will not fix it.
