Dive into a carefully crafted AFCAD layout that enhances Drachten Airport (EHDR) in the Netherlands, offering an updated environment for general aviation enthusiasts who prefer short-field operations in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. This scenery is brought to you by its creator, Joost de Wit, and it is designed to function seamlessly with the default FSX world.
Refined Airport Configuration for Drachten (EHDR)
This AFCAD file delivers an optimized layout for one of the smaller aerodromes in the country, located in the Friesland region of northern Holland. Though Drachten is known to support light aircraft traffic, its default configuration in FSX was minimal. Consequently, this package provides a more realistic taxiway structure, runway positioning, and content alignment while staying compatible with default scenery objects.

Technical Details and Realism
Built and tested in the default installation of Microsoft Flight Simulator X, the files come in BGL format. Each BGL file is generated using Airport Design Editor (ADE). Although the visuals rely on default buildings, the polish of taxiways, parking spots, and apron alignments follows real-world placements closely. This design approach ensures that general aviation aficionados can enjoy a practical rendition of the airfield without compromising performance.
In the real world, the airport relies on a Radio frequency rather than a Tower frequency. However, in this AFCAD, a Tower frequency is introduced, so there is an actual voice component for departure or arrival instructions inside the simulator environment. This element adds a slight departure from reality, yet it enriches the interactive experience for pilots in FSX.
Installation Procedure
- Copy both BGL files into your FSX/Addon Scenery/Scenery directory.
- Verify that the Addon Scenery folder is active in the simulator’s library.
Uninstalling the Files
- Simply remove the two BGL files from the FSX/Addon Scenery/Scenery folder.
Key Takeaways
- Realistic Layout: Includes parking areas and runways that closely mimic the real-world arrangement of Drachten.
- Default Scenery Integration: Utilizes default building assets for simple yet effective enhancement.
- Tower Frequency Adjustment: Provides interactive voice communication within FSX for improved immersion.
- Small GA Focus: Drachten Airport’s intimate setting is ideal for short training flights and VFR practice.
Enjoy operating out of this cozy airfield in northern Holland, and experience the unique charm that comes from a well-tuned general aviation environment. All credit for this AFCAD project goes to Joost de Wit.
