This freeware release by Ray Smith refines Narita International Airport (RJAA) in Tokyo, Japan within Microsoft Flight Simulator X. It incorporates expanded parking, revised support vehicle routing systems, and additional refueling operations to bring more realism to one of Japan’s busiest international gateways. Thanks to extra parking assignments and the newly reformed aircraft stands, this enhanced layout captures the complexity of RJAA’s traffic flow while integrating improved safety features. The tower viewpoint from the roof also offers an immersive angle to monitor incoming and outgoing aircraft.
Upgraded Layout and Parking Improvements
Ray Smith meticulously designed these AFCAD files using Airport Design Editor (ADE) to enhance Narita’s default scenery. Operators will appreciate the refined aircraft parking architecture (including designated gates and cargo zones) that aligns with an international hub of this magnitude. Each parking slot and taxi route focuses on efficient ground handling and better traffic throughput. Additionally, multiple fuel truck pathways have been augmented to accommodate wide-body arrivals and streamline turnaround procedures.

Key Files and Their Placement
Primary BGL Files
The package contains two essential components:
- RJAA_ADE_RS.BGL
- RJAA_ADE_OBJ.BGL
Both files must be installed properly to ensure the terrain, structures, and parking alignments appear as intended. If you have used Ray Smith’s earlier RJAA versions, consider removing or overwriting those files to prevent conflicts.
Installation Guidelines
- Place RJAA_ADE_RS.BGL in the “Addon Scenery/scenery” folder within your main Microsoft Flight Simulator X directory.
- Copy RJAA_ADE_OBJ.BGL into “Scenery/Global/scenery” under the simulator’s root folder.
- For jetway extensions, locate and replicate the following textures from FSX/Scenery/NAME/Texture to Scenery/Global/Texture:
- jfk_jetway.dds (day texture)
- jfk_jetway_LM.dds (night texture)
If these textures were already placed during a previous Ray Smith airport enhancement, you can safely skip this step.
Important Usage Tips
- Exclusive File in Addon Scenery: Keep only RJAA_ADE_RS.BGL in your “Addon Scenery/scenery” location. Having multiple RJAA BGL files can cause unexpected parking issues or overlapping objects.
- AI Traffic Conflicts: Ensure that any AI traffic add-ons have not installed a secondary AFCAD for Narita (RJAA). Duplicate AFCADs often lead to irregularities in gate assignments and pathfinding.
Optional Removal Procedure
- Simply delete or move the BGL files from their installed folders.
- Upon restarting Microsoft Flight Simulator X, the default RJAA airport scenery will resume as normal.
Enjoy your updated Narita experience, and thanks to Ray Smith for delivering this upgraded AFCAD to the community.
