This freeware scenery package by Ray Smith creates a comprehensive overhaul of Jacksonville International Airport (KJAX) in Florida, specifically for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. It significantly refines the airport layout while offering multiple customization options, including a new crosswind runway configuration. Users can install either of two included files, each tailored to different operational preferences, ensuring the best experience based on individual flying styles. Numerous additions such as expanded cargo areas, reworked support vehicle paths, and an updated control tower vantage point offer a more realistic representation of this facility, which is situated about 13 miles north of downtown Jacksonville.
Enhanced Airport Layout and Utilities
Developer: Ray Smith
The modification takes advantage of the latest Airport Design Editor (ADE) methods (v1.37). Jacksonville International Airport’s taxiways, aprons, and overall ground layout receive extensive improvements, including:
- Corrected and functional crosswind runway for more dynamic traffic flows
- Refined hold short nodes to resolve issues near Runway 13 (on the ANG side)
- Newly constructed control tower and enhanced cargo facilities
- Redistributed parking spots for better aircraft allocation and fueling
- Additional floodlighting (visible for users with the Acceleration expansion)
- Dedicated support vehicle roads and a lighted helipad for rotorcraft
Jacksonville International Scenery.
Crosswind Runway Configuration
Two BGL files are included:
- KJAX_ADE_RS.BGL
- Offers a standard operation where only the main runway is active for takeoff and landing.
- KJAX_ADE_CW_RS.BGL
- Activates the crosswind runway using a technique credited to Jim Vile. The ATIS may announce “fake” runways, which is intentional and needed to enable multiple active runways simultaneously.
It is essential to select only one of these files and place it into the Addon Scenery/scenery folder at a time. These files also provide consistent parking setups, so users can switch between normal and crosswind modes without losing custom allocations.
Tip for Tower View
Ray Smith recommends assigning a control or key for the “View track/pan Toggle.” This configuration allows rotational panning from the tower perspective, making it easier to scan the entire airfield from an elevated viewpoint. Toggling again returns to the user aircraft position.
Installation Guidance
- Choose either the KJAX_ADE_RS.BGL (standard) or KJAX_ADE_CW_RS.BGL (crosswind) file.
- Copy the selected file into your Flight Simulator X/Addon Scenery/scenery directory.
- Launch Microsoft Flight Simulator X to apply the revised layout.
Note: If multiple KJAX-related BGL files exist in the Addon Scenery folder, remove any duplicates to prevent parking conflicts.
Uninstallation Steps
To revert to the default Microsoft Flight Simulator X version, simply remove or delete whichever KJAX BGL file you introduced. The simulator will then load the original airport data.
Acknowledgments and Development Notes
- ADE Utility: Created by Jon Masterson (freeware tool used for editing airport layouts).
- Crosswind Runway Technique: Developed by Jim Vile.
- Family Support: Special thanks to Ray Smith’s wife for her patience throughout the design process.
Jacksonville International is known for its balanced mix of commercial traffic and cargo operations, making these improvements particularly useful for high-volume virtual flights.
