FSX/P3D De Havilland DH82a Tiger Moth

A complete De Havilland DH82a Tiger Moth package compatible with all versions of FSX (including Steam Edition) and all versions of Prepar3D (including v4).

The original model has been developed by Anthony Lynch (Ant's Airplanes).

Features of the model

• Native FSX SP2 model using bump and specular maps which also works in P3Dv4
• Custom smooth 3D gauges (only the GPS is a default gauge) - Working Auto Slots
• Startup by pulling the prop
• Model lodded for better performance in multiplayer
• Wheel chocks, pitot cover, and tie-downs
• Passenger and Pilot can be hidden
• Joysticks can be hidden
• Luggage loads depending on payload
• Side slip and Spins (more or less)

Known Problems

• No Virtual Cockpit self-shadowing
• Exterior model self-shadowing glitch near wingtips
• Brakes. Original Tigers had no brakes at all. Some modern have a small parking brake fitted and a few others have toe brakes. I had intended to have a parking brake and no toe brakes but it seems FSX can't handle this. As you need a parking brake (the wheel chocks are for show only) I have had to include toe brakes.
• FSDS appears to place a 1mm resolution on models it produces therefore many of the knobs and dials are not as round as I would have liked.
• Wheel chocks, tie-downs, passenger and pilot visibility data is stored in the cowl flaps variable. If you use a key command to change the cowl flaps setting then you may see some strange things. Just return the cowl flaps to fully closed to reset.

Flying Controls

Dual controls are fitted and are interconnected between the cockpits. Solo flying must be carried out in the rear cockpit. The front control column may be removed for solo flying or when carrying passengers. Press Shift+3 to bring up the Animation Manager and click on Passenger Joystick to remove the control column. For a better vision of the radios, the rear control column may be removed from the virtual cockpit by clicking on the base of the column.

Longitudinal trimming is effected by spring loading the elevators. A lever is located on the left side of both cockpits.

Automatic Slots

Auto slots are fitted to the top wings and will automatically deploy at low speed. There is a locking lever located on the right-hand side of the rear cockpit (the top of which may be obscured by the GPS).

Click on the lever to pull it back which will lock the slots and prevent them from opening. You should lock the slots when taxying or attempting aerobatics.

Engine Controls

A throttle lever is mounted on the left-hand side of each cockpit. Pull back to fully close the throttle, push forward to open the throttle. In addition, the rear cockpit has a mixture lever (red knob). Fully back = full rich. However, there is a hook that prevents the mixture lever being in front of the throttle lever. You cannot use the mixture lever to stop the engine (use the magnetos to do this)

Instruments

Simple instruments to display airspeed, engine revolution, oil pressure, altitude and turn and slip are provided in both cockpits. A simple wind-driven airspeed gauge is located on the forward left-wing strut (note, airspeed is displayed in MPH).

A compass is also included. This features a locking lever to prevent accidentally turning the heading dial.

Additional Equipment

Additional equipment has been added to the rear cockpit to reflect the modern aircraft. Bendix/King Air KY196A comms and KT70 transponder are located between the pilot's legs. Battery and generator controls are located on the panel to provide power for the radios.

A smoke switch will turn the smoker on and both cockpits feature independently switchable lights although as no landing, strobe or nav lights are fitted to the aircraft you should not try flying at night.

Animation Manager

The Animation Manager is a 2D panel popup that allows you to control certain animations. These include placing wheel chocks, tie-downs, pitot cover, opening various doors as well as visibility of the pilot and passenger. You can also switch the display of the GPS unit on or off.

You can also switch the pilot in the virtual cockpit on or off (the default is off). Useful if you fly from the passenger seat.

Note that when the wheel chocks are placed the parking brake will be set to on and when removed the parking brake will be released. However, this can be overridden by the parking brake key command.

Stowage Space

A storage compartment is located behind the cockpit. Use the exit 3 command are the Animation Manager (shift+3) to open and close the door.

If the payload is set to greater than 0 you will see some snacks there. The wheel chocks are also stored here although only visible if the payload is 0.

• BB694 - c/n 3340 was built as G-ADGV by Morris Motors at Cowley, Oxford and delivered to Brooklands Aviation in May 1935. Impressed into the Royal Air force in September 1940. Painted as when used by the Britannia Flight, Royal Naval College based at Plymouth in the 1960s.Returned to the civil register in 1983 as G-ADGV and painted in Brooklands colors. Still airworthy, now based in the Netherlands.
• DE745 - c/n 85675 was built by Morris Motors at Cowley, Oxford and delivered to the Royal Air force in 1942. Transferred to the US Army Air Force in 1943. Used by the 353rd Fighter Group as a liaison aircraft, based at Metfield, Suffolk.
• DF184 - c/n 85920 was delivered to the Royal Air force in 1943. Painted as when used by No 5 Glider Training School based at Shobdon.
• EM973 - c/n 86156 was delivered to the Royal Air force in 1943. Painted as when used by No 401(Canadian) Squadron as a hack, the Squadron Spitfire codes 'YO' being applied. Bought by W.A. Rollason Ltd in 1953 and converted to Civil use, registered G-ANNU. Sold to New Zealand as ZK-BFB in 1954 and then to the United States as N973JS in 1989.
• G-ACDC - c/n 3177 was built at Hatfield and delivered to No 1 Elementary and Reserve Flying School operated by de Havilland Aircraft Co.Ltd. at Hatfield in 1933. Impressed to Royal Air Force as BB726 in 1940. Sold to Rollasons Aircraft and Engines Ltd in 1957, converted for civil use and restored to G-ACDC for use by The Tiger Club. The aircraft is still currently airworthy and still with the Tiger Club.
• G-ADNV - c/n 3416 was built at Hatfield and delivered to No 10 Elementary and Reserve Flying School operated by Bristol Aeroplane Co.Ltd. at Yatesbury in 1935. Sold to Brooklands Flying Club in 1937. Impressed to Royal Air Force as BD155 in 1940. Used as instructional airframe 2489M post-war. Fate unknown.
• G-ADPC - c/n 3393 was built at Hatfield and delivered to No 7 Elementary and Reserve Flying School operated by Reid and Sigrist Ltd. at Desford in 1935. Impressed to Royal Air Force as BB852 in 1941 and later transferred to the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm as a pilot trainer until 1964. Written off in a crash and stored until rebuilt and restored to the civil register in 1992. Passed through several owners and is currently used for giving pleasure flights over the Derbyshire countryside.
• G-ADXT - c/n 3436 was built at Hatfield and delivered to No 7 Elementary and Reserve Flying School operated by Reid and Sigrist Ltd. at Desford in 1935. Impressed to Royal Air Force as BD860 in 1940. Stored until bought by John Pothecary and restored to airworthy condition in 1979. Sold in 1989 and passed through four other owners until destroyed in a fatal crash in 2017.
• G-AHOO - c/n 86150 was built by Morris Motors at Cowley, Oxford and delivered to the Royal Air force as EM967 in 1943. Used as instructional airframe 6940M post-war. Sold as G-AHOO in 1985. Still currently airworthy, based in Wiltshire.
• G-ALIW - c/n 82901 was built at Hatfield in 1938 and assembled in New Zealand as NZ899 for the Royal New Zealand Air Force. In 1949 it was allocated to the Wairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club as ZK-ATI. Exported to the USA in 1976 as N27WB until repatriated to the UK in 1981. Assigned the previously unallocated registration of G-ALIW, the aircraft is still airworthy.
• G-AMTV - c/n 3858 was built at Hatfield and delivered to the Royal Air force as N6545 in 1935. One of many Tiger Moths sold to Rollason Aircraft & Engines Ltd at Croydon, G-AMTV was converted for civil use and sold to Belgium as OO-SOE in 1952. It returned to the UK in 1991 and passed through several owners. Still currently airworthy.
• G-ANFM - c/n 83604 was delivered to the Royal Air force as T5888 in 1940. Sold to Norfolk and Norwich Aero Club in October 1953. Sold to the Reading Flying Group in 1966 and is still flying with them currently.
• G-AOAA - c/n 85908 was built by Morris Motors at Cowley, Oxford and delivered to the Royal Air force as DF159 in 1942. One of many Tiger Moths sold to Rollason Aircraft & Engines Ltd at Croydon, G-AOAA was one of four converted to 'Super Tiger' with the fuel tank moved to the front cockpit and fitted with an inverted flying fuel system for aerobatic competition use in the '60s. Displayed for many years by the Tiger Club at Redhill, the fuel tank was eventually refitted to normal position. Refurbished by Rollasons in 1991, G-AOAA is still airworthy with a private owner.
• G-AVPJ - c/n 86326 was built by Morris Motors at Cowley, Oxford and delivered to the Royal Air force as NL879 in 1943. Sold to the Royal Air Force College Flying Club in June 1967. Sold in 1973 and passed through several other owners. Painted as when used by The Barnstormers Flying Circus between 1974 and 1983. The aircraft is still airworthy although now fitted with the anti-spinning fuselage strake and painted in a red and silver scheme.
• G-AXBW - c/n 83595 was delivered to the Royal Air force in 1940 as T5879. Used as an instructional airframe post-WWII and sold to the civil market in 1969. Currently airworthy and painted in Cambridge University Air Squadron markings.
• K2570 - c/n 1742 was delivered to the Royal Air force in 1931. Allocated to No 3 Flying Training School at Grantham. Transferred to No 24 Squadron, based at Hendon in 1933 and struck off charge in July 1934.
• L6923 - c/n 3558 was delivered to the Royal Air force in 1937. Painted as when used by No 1 Elementary & Reserve Flying Training School based at Hatfield in 1938.
• N9374 - c/n 82444 was delivered to the Royal Air force in 1940. Painted as when used by No 22 Elementary Flying Training School based at Cambridge.
• T6818 - c/n 85087 was built by Morris Motors at Cowley, Oxford and delivered to the Royal Air force in 1942. Sold to the civil market in 1953 as G-ANKT and passed through several owners until acquired by the Shuttleworth Collection in 1971. Restored to airworthy condition and flown regularly at Shuttleworth displays although currently painted in a silver and red scheme.
• T7741 - c/n 84123 was delivered to the Royal Air force in 1942. Painted as when used by No 25(Polish) Elementary Flying Training School based at Hucknall in 1943. Collided with T7689 and crash-landed November 1944.
• T7899 - c/n 84260 was delivered to the Royal Air force in 1943. Painted as when used by Oxford University Air Squadron, based at RAF Abingdon in 1946. They stalled at low altitude and crashed near Kingston Bagpuize, Berks in 1949.
• W7956 - operated by No 727 Naval Air Squadron, based at RNAS Gosport (HMS Siskin) between 1946-1950.
