What is the best freeware F-22 add-on for MSFS?
Our freeware pick for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is the original Top Mach Studios F-22A, but it is a legacy release and authorised availability is inconsistent. Do not substitute the similarly named FSX package. For MSFS 2024, install an F-22 only when its documentation explicitly confirms compatibility with that simulator.
Why is the Top Mach Studios F-22A the best freeware choice?
The original freeware F-22A is the strongest MSFS 2020 option because it was built as an MSFS aircraft rather than presented as a simple FSX drop-in. It provides the recognisable Raptor model, a flyable cockpit and the high-performance handling most users want from a free F-22.
There are two catches. The freeware build is an older product, and it should not be confused with any later commercial edition from the same developer. Features, fixes and compatibility claims made for a paid edition do not automatically apply to the original free aircraft.
Authorised distribution matters as well. Freeware does not grant blanket permission for third parties to repackage or redistribute an aircraft. If the original build is not available from an authorised source, we would choose another native MSFS military aircraft rather than install an unidentified mirror or modified archive.
| F-22 option | Recommendation | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Original Top Mach Studios freeware F-22A | Best legacy free choice for MSFS 2020 | Availability, support and MSFS 2024 compatibility are not guaranteed |
| F-22 package labelled for FSX or Prepar3D | Do not install in MSFS | It uses a different aircraft and package format |
| Newer freeware F-22 labelled for MSFS | Consider it only after checking provenance and exact simulator support | An exterior model alone does not guarantee a working cockpit or flight model |
Will the freeware FSX F-22 work in Microsoft Flight Simulator?
No. The free F-22 Raptor package in our older library is intended for FSX and compatible Prepar3D use; it is not a native MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024 aircraft. Copying it into the MSFS Community folder will not convert it.
This is a mistake we see constantly because “Microsoft Flight Simulator” is used casually for several generations of the simulator. Check the compatibility field before downloading: it must name MSFS 2020, MSFS 2024 or both, rather than merely saying Flight Simulator.
Does the freeware F-22 work in MSFS 2024?
An MSFS 2020 F-22 should be treated as unverified in MSFS 2024 unless its developer or package documentation explicitly supports the newer simulator. MSFS 2024 can load some 2020 packages, but appearing in the aircraft list does not prove complete compatibility.
Test the cockpit controls, displays, landing gear, flaps, lighting and flight behaviour before keeping a legacy aircraft installed. Missing textures, unusable controls, blank displays or a failure when loading the flight all indicate that the package needs an update rather than an installation workaround.
Can you install a freeware F-22 on Xbox or PlayStation?
No PC Community-folder aircraft can be sideloaded onto Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5. Although MSFS 2024 is available on both console families, console users can install only content distributed through the simulator's supported console channels. The downloadable freeware discussed here is therefore a PC option.
How do you install the F-22 correctly?
A native MSFS F-22 installs like most other Community-folder aircraft, but the extracted package must have the correct folder structure.
- Confirm compatibility: verify that the archive explicitly names your simulator. Do not proceed if it says only FSX or Prepar3D.
- Extract the archive: do not place the compressed ZIP file in
Community. - Find the package root: the folder containing files such as
manifest.jsonandlayout.jsonis the folder that belongs inCommunity. - Use the active Community folder: its location differs between MSFS versions and PC installations. Our aircraft installation guide explains how to locate it.
- Restart the simulator: then search the aircraft selection screen for the F-22 or its developer name.
If the aircraft does not appear, the usual cause is an extra wrapper folder. A structure such as Community/F22/F22/manifest.json is probably nested one level too deep. Duplicate or older copies of the same aircraft can also conflict, so keep only one installed while testing.
Non-working weapons are not evidence of a failed installation. Most MSFS military freeware concentrates on flying and presentation rather than functional combat systems; missiles and gun components may be visual only.
What should you use if the freeware F-22 is unavailable?
Choose a native freeware military jet with a documented cockpit and explicit support for your MSFS version rather than forcing an FSX conversion. Our MSFS military-aircraft library contains the most relevant fighter alternatives, while the full MSFS freeware aircraft index is useful for checking newly added packages and their stated simulator compatibility.
Before installing any replacement, look for a named author, an unambiguous licence, cockpit images, identified dependencies and a clear MSFS 2020 or 2024 label. Those checks are more useful than judging an F-22 solely by exterior screenshots.
