Yes. The Logitech X52 remains a good mid-range PC HOTAS for general flight simulation, especially if you already own a working unit. It provides a separate throttle, twist rudder and plenty of programmable controls. Its weak points are centre play, dated software and axis jitter on worn examples, so condition and price matter.

Why is the X52 still useful?

The X52 still covers the controls most PC simmers need without requiring rudder pedals or a separate throttle quadrant. The twist grip can control rudder and nosewheel steering, while the throttle's rotaries and slider can be assigned to propeller pitch, mixture, zoom or other analogue functions.

Its hats, mode selector and pinkie switch provide enough inputs for general aviation, airliners and many combat aircraft. We recommend binding primary controls directly inside the simulator; complicated programming profiles can multiply the available commands, but they are also a common source of unexpected inputs.

The main compromise is the spring-and-collar centring design. It can feel loose near the centre and less consistent through its travel than a good modern gimbal. That matters most during aerial refuelling, close formation flying and helicopter control. The single throttle lever is also functional rather than authentic for twin-engine airliners.

Does the X52 work with modern flight simulators?

A working X52 can be used with the major Windows PC flight simulators because its axes and buttons are exposed as standard controller inputs. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, X-Plane, DCS, FSX and Prepar3D can all accept manual X52 assignments even when a useful preset is not supplied.

A blank or poor default profile does not mean the HOTAS is incompatible. Bind pitch, roll, yaw and throttle first, remove duplicate axis assignments, and then add buttons one group at a time. What are the common Logitech X52 problems?

The most common X52 complaints are centre play, noisy axes, loose connections and conflicting profiles rather than a lack of simulator support.

  • Loose centre: A small amount of movement around neutral is characteristic of the design. Use only enough dead zone to stop unwanted input; a large or uneven neutral area usually indicates wear rather than a settings problem.
  • Axis jitter or drift: Watch the raw pitch, roll, twist, throttle, rotary and slider signals in Windows. A small dead zone can suppress minor noise, but it cannot properly fix values that jump abruptly. In MSFS 2024, follow the axis calibration and response-curve procedure before assuming the hardware has failed.
  • Intermittent stick input: Reseat the cable between the stick and throttle, inspect its pins and try a direct USB port on the PC. Lights or an active LCD prove that the unit has power, not that every axis and button is communicating correctly.
  • Duplicate or phantom commands: Clear unwanted simulator assignments and temporarily disable elaborate Logitech profiles. Multiple devices mapped to the same axis can produce control movement that looks like X52 drift.
  • Throttle detent mismatch: The physical detents rarely correspond perfectly with every simulator's idle, reverse-thrust or afterburner ranges. Calibrate the usable travel and create detent zones in the simulator where supported.
  • Limited LCD integration: The display can show profile and basic information, but it is not automatically a working aircraft instrument panel in every simulator. Do not choose the X52 primarily for its screen.

How should you test a used Logitech X52?

Test every raw input in Windows before buying a used X52, because an attractive exterior does not reveal worn sensors, cable faults or an off-centre twist axis.

  1. Inspect the hardware. Check the USB and stick-to-throttle cables, connector pins, stick collar, throttle tension control and adjustment mechanisms for damage.
  2. Open the Windows controller panel. Run joy.cpl, select the X52 and use the properties screen. Our Windows joystick testing procedure explains what each raw-input check should reveal.
  3. Move each axis slowly. Look for smooth travel from one limit to the other. Sudden jumps, values that fail to reach an endpoint, or a throttle that moves while untouched indicate trouble.
  4. Check neutral stability. Release the stick several times from different directions. Pitch, roll and twist should return close enough to neutral that a modest dead zone stops movement.
  5. Test every control. Operate the hats, buttons, mode selector, pinkie switch, rotaries, slider and mouse control. Gently move the interconnect cable while watching for disconnections.

Older Saitek-labelled X52 units use the same long-running design family and can still work well, but their age makes this test especially important. A smooth standard X52 is a better purchase than a badly worn X52 Pro.

Should you keep, buy or replace an X52?

Keep a smooth X52; buy one only when its condition and price compensate for the older gimbal design; replace it when precise centre control or dedicated aircraft-style controls matter more than button count.

  • Keep it if all axes are stable, the centre play is manageable and the layout suits the aircraft you fly. A working X52 does not need replacing simply because the design is old.
  • Buy it used when you can perform the complete input test and the price reflects the risk of worn rotaries, twist sensors and cables.
  • Buy it new when you specifically value its adjustable grip, twist rudder, mode controls and separate throttle, and it is clearly cheaper than newer controllers with better gimbals or sensors.
  • Replace it for demanding helicopter flying, frequent formation or refuelling work, independent multi-engine throttles, or a more realistic yoke-and-quadrant cockpit.

Is the X52 Pro worth paying more for?

The X52 Pro is an incremental refinement rather than a different class of HOTAS. Its dual-spring centring mechanism, additional metal components and revised presentation make it preferable when condition and prices are close, but it retains the same broad layout and many of the standard X52's age-related risks. Condition should decide any used purchase.
