Where can I download free X-Plane 12 aircraft?

Where to download free aircraft for X-Plane 12, plus how to spot genuine XP12-compatible freeware before you waste time installing it.

You can download free aircraft for X-Plane 12 from our X-Plane freeware library, where aircraft pages usually show the type, screenshots and compatibility notes. The safest approach is to choose packages marked for X-Plane 12, or older releases with clear evidence they still load properly in XP12 before you install them.

Best place to download free X-Plane 12 aircraft

Our X-Plane freeware library with aircraft and add-ons is the simplest place to start because it keeps X-Plane files in one place and makes version checking easier. That matters with freeware aircraft, because X-Plane 11 and X-Plane 12 packages are often mixed together in search results.

If you do not want to browse everything, our curated list of standout freeware X-Plane add-ons is a faster way to find a few proven aircraft and related extras. For a direct example, this freeware 737-800/BBJ2 download is the kind of full aircraft package you should be looking for, not just a repaint or sound pack.

How do I know if a freeware aircraft really works in X-Plane 12?

Check whether the file page says the aircraft was built for X-Plane 12, merely compatible with it, or made for X-Plane 11. Those labels matter.

  • Built for X-Plane 12: your safest choice, especially if you want working avionics, lighting and flight-model behaviour with the least tinkering.
  • Compatible with X-Plane 12: often usable, but read the notes for missing features, display issues or plugin warnings.
  • Made for X-Plane 11: sometimes fine for simple aircraft, but more likely to show problems in complex airliners or aircraft with older custom systems.

A mistake we see constantly is downloading by screenshot quality alone. A good-looking aircraft can still have broken cockpit displays, outdated plugins, no cabin or external objects, or handling that does not feel right in X-Plane 12.

What if the download only mentions X-Plane 11?

Some X-Plane 11 aircraft do run in X-Plane 12, but treat them as a test rather than a certainty. If you just want something that works, start with aircraft clearly described for X-Plane 12 and leave older freeware for later.

What should be inside the download?

A proper aircraft download should unpack into a full aircraft folder containing the aircraft's .acf file. If that file is missing, you probably did not download a complete aircraft.

  • Full aircraft folder: this is what X-Plane loads.
  • Readme or manual: useful for installation notes, liveries and any special plugins.
  • Optional subfolders: objects, sounds, liveries and plugins are normal inside a complete aircraft package.

If the archive contains only a liveries folder, it is a repaint, not a flyable aircraft. Another common problem is a nested folder structure after unzipping, where the real aircraft folder is buried one level too deep; X-Plane then fails to list it in the aircraft menu.

What do I do after downloading?

Unzip the package and place the aircraft's top-level folder inside X-Plane 12/Aircraft. If you want the exact folder layout and the common fixes for missing aircraft in the menu, use our guide on installing add-on aircraft in X-Plane 12.

After that, start X-Plane 12 and load the aircraft from the aircraft selection screen. If it appears but parts of the cockpit are dead, the usual cause is an older plugin or an aircraft that was never properly updated for X-Plane 12.
