Learn how to enable and read the X-Plane 12 HUD, use aircraft-specific displays, and fix missing, dim or misaligned symbology.
To use the HUD in X-Plane 12, choose View > Change (Internal) > Forward with HUD; the standard shortcut is Shift+W. This displays X-Plane’s generic flight symbology over the outside view. A cockpit-mounted HUD is different: it works only in equipped aircraft and may require electrical power, brightness adjustment and correct head position.
Which X-Plane 12 HUD should I use?
X-Plane 12 provides a generic forward-view HUD, while some aircraft also have a modelled HUD inside their 3-D cockpit.

The keyboard shortcut changes the camera view; it does not switch on an aircraft’s physical HUD. Conversely, a cockpit HUD remains part of the 3-D cockpit rather than appearing through the generic forward-view command.
How do I turn on the generic X-Plane 12 HUD?
Selecting the Forward with HUD view is enough to display X-Plane’s generic overlay.
- Load the aircraft and enter an internal cockpit view.
- Open the HUD view through
View > Change (Internal) > Forward with HUD. - Use the shortcut
Shift+Wwhen you want to change views quickly. - Check the keyboard assignment under
Settings > Keyboardby searching for “Forward with HUD” if the shortcut does nothing. A customised or conflicting assignment may have replaced it. - Return to the 3-D cockpit through the View menu or its assigned shortcut when you need the aircraft’s switches and panel.
A mistake we see constantly is pressing a forward-view shortcut and assuming a blank outside view means the HUD is broken. X-Plane has separate forward views with a panel, with a HUD and with nothing displayed, so confirm which command is actually assigned.
What do the HUD symbols mean?
The HUD combines attitude, performance and directional information so that you can monitor the aircraft without looking down at the instrument panel.

Exact symbols vary between the generic overlay and aircraft-specific systems. During an approach, the flight-path marker is useful for judging where the aeroplane is travelling, but it does not replace airspeed control, flare judgement or the correct altimeter setting.

How do I use an aircraft-specific HUD?
A built-in cockpit HUD must be operated according to that aircraft’s systems rather than through X-Plane’s generic HUD command.
- Confirm that the aircraft has a modelled HUD. A windscreen alone does not imply HUD support, and most general-aviation aircraft do not have one.
- Supply electrical and avionics power. A modelled HUD may remain blank until the battery, generators, avionics or relevant display system is operating.
- Deploy or enable the display. If the aircraft models a folding combiner or HUD master control, place it in its operating position.
- Adjust the brightness. Set the symbology bright enough to read against the sky without making it obscure the runway or outside references.
- Place your viewpoint inside the eye box. A collimated HUD can disappear or become cropped when the pilot’s head is too high, low or far to one side. Use our cockpit camera positioning instructions to centre the view accurately.
- Select the required guidance mode. Navigation, flight-director and approach cues will not appear merely because the HUD is powered; the associated source and mode must also be active.
Control names and operating modes differ by aircraft, especially with third-party models. Use the documentation supplied with that aircraft rather than copying switch positions from an unrelated cockpit.
Why is the X-Plane 12 HUD missing or cut off?
A missing X-Plane 12 HUD usually comes down to the wrong view, an altered key binding, insufficient aircraft power or a viewpoint outside the modelled HUD’s eye box.
- No generic overlay: select Forward with HUD from the View menu instead of relying on the shortcut, then check the keyboard assignment.
- Generic HUD disappears in the cockpit: this is expected when returning to the normal 3-D cockpit view. The generic HUD is a separate internal view.
- Modelled HUD is completely dark: check electrical power, avionics, the HUD master control and its brightness setting.
- Only part of the display is visible: reset or reposition the cockpit camera. The symbology must be viewed through the HUD’s designed eye box.
- Navigation cue is absent: verify the flight director, navigation source and applicable lateral or vertical mode.

Every aircraft can use X-Plane’s generic Forward with HUD view, but only an aircraft built with a functioning cockpit HUD can display one naturally on its windscreen or combiner glass.
