X-Plane 12 is Laminar Research’s desktop flight simulator for Windows, macOS and Linux. It models aircraft aerodynamics, cockpit systems, global scenery, weather and time of day within one simulation platform. You can fly included aircraft, install add-ons, practise procedures, create scenery and connect yokes, pedals, throttles or other specialist controls.
What does X-Plane 12 include?
X-Plane 12 provides the simulator engine, a selection of flyable aircraft and worldwide scenery rather than one aircraft or a fixed collection of missions.
- Aircraft: The included fleet covers several categories, from general aviation to airliners, helicopters and military types. Each aircraft has its own level of system detail.
- World scenery: Terrain, roads, water, vegetation and airports form a global environment. Scenery regions can consume substantial storage, so users do not necessarily install the entire world.
- Weather and environment: Conditions can be configured manually or generated from real-world weather data. X-Plane 12 also models clouds, precipitation, seasonal effects, runway contamination, lighting and water.
- Simulation features: Built-in functions include failures, replays, air traffic control, networking, flight planning and aircraft-development utilities.
Add-ons are optional. The base simulator is usable without them, although many simmers later add more detailed aircraft, local scenery, utilities or updated navigation data.
How does the X-Plane 12 flight model work?
X-Plane’s defining feature is its blade-element flight model, which calculates forces across small sections of wings, propellers, rotor blades and other aerodynamic surfaces as the aircraft moves.
That approach allows changes in attitude, airflow, control position and aircraft geometry to affect the result dynamically. It does not guarantee that every aircraft is equally accurate: the quality still depends on the developer’s geometry, aerofoil data, mass distribution, engine modelling, control setup and custom systems.

Is X-Plane 12 free, and where does it run?
X-Plane 12 is paid commercial software, with a restricted free demo available for testing basic operation, controls and performance before buying. It runs on supported Windows, macOS and Linux computers; X-Plane 12 is not a console title, and X-Plane Mobile is a separate product.
Performance depends heavily on the processor, graphics card, screen resolution, weather, scenery and aircraft being used. A simple default aircraft at a quiet airport may run well while a detailed airliner, dense scenery and complex clouds expose hardware limits. Storage use also changes according to the scenery regions installed.

Is X-Plane 12 suitable for beginners and flight training?
X-Plane 12 suits beginners, but starting with a simple aircraft, clear weather and correctly calibrated controls is far easier than beginning in a complex airliner.
The built-in lessons introduce fundamental handling and procedures. We explain how to start and repeat X-Plane 12 Flight School lessons, including aircraft selection and practice setup.
For real-world training, the simulator is useful for cockpit familiarisation, instrument scans, navigation and procedure rehearsal. A consumer installation and home cockpit are not automatically an approved training device; loggable or creditable training requires a specifically approved hardware-and-software configuration under the relevant aviation authority.
Do X-Plane 11 aircraft and scenery work in X-Plane 12?
Some X-Plane 11 content works in X-Plane 12, but compatibility should never be assumed, especially for complex aircraft and plugins.
Conventional scenery often transfers more readily than aircraft containing custom avionics or compiled plugins. An add-on must also include compatible binaries for the operating system and processor being used. When an X-Plane 12-specific release exists, use that version.

A mistake we see constantly is placing the actual add-on one folder too deep inside an extra download wrapper. Other common failures include missing scenery libraries, incorrect scenery order and plugins compiled only for another operating system or X-Plane generation.
