How do I turn the seat belt sign on?
Use the aircraft’s clickable cockpit switch whenever possible, especially in complex add-on aircraft that may not respond to a simulator-wide keyboard command.
- Power the aircraft: in a cold-and-dark cockpit, connect electrical power and activate any required utility or cabin systems.
- Open the overhead view: locate the panel labelled
SIGNS,PASSENGER SIGNSorSEAT BELTS. - Select the required position: move the switch to ON, OFF or AUTO, depending on the positions fitted to that aircraft.
- Check the result: look for a cockpit indication, cabin placard or audible chime. Some aircraft model only the switch and system state, not a visible passenger cabin.
If the aircraft has no usable switch, search the simulator’s control assignments for terms such as seat belt, passenger signs or cabin signs. Command names vary between Microsoft Flight Simulator, FSX, Prepar3D and X-Plane. What do OFF, AUTO and ON mean?

Why does the seat belt sign not work?
An unresponsive flight simulator seat belt sign usually points to missing electrical power, an unsupported generic command, conflicting bindings or an aircraft that does not model the function.
- The switch will not move: confirm that the cockpit control is interactive and that the aircraft has electrical power. Some decorative cockpit switches have no simulated function.
- A keyboard or controller binding does nothing: the aircraft may use custom code rather than the simulator’s standard seat-belt event. Operate the cockpit switch or use an aircraft-specific command documented by its developer.
- The switch snaps back: check for duplicate hardware assignments, a continuously held switch or an automated co-pilot or assistance feature overriding the selection.
- ON works but AUTO seems wrong: AUTO follows the aircraft model’s programmed logic. Test it through the expected flight phases or use ON when the checklist explicitly requires the sign.
- There is no cabin indicator: the aircraft may not include a modelled cabin or visible placard. FSX users can add a gauge showing seat belt and no-smoking indications, although the aircraft still needs functioning sign controls.
- There is no chime: the sound may not be modelled, may be assigned to cabin or interior audio, or may play only when the sign changes state.
Can the seat belt sign trigger cabin announcements?
Yes, but only when the aircraft or passenger utility is programmed to monitor the sign’s state. A simple aircraft may provide nothing beyond a switch and chime, while a cabin add-on can use the change to start an announcement or alter passenger behaviour.
Some utilities detect the transition from OFF or AUTO to ON rather than merely checking whether the sign is illuminated. If announcements fail, avoid loading the flight with the sign already on and confirm that the utility is configured to monitor the correct aircraft event.
