Expert Overview

I flew deejing’s RV-4 in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 as a casual kitplane rather than a handling reference. The fixed-pitch propeller kept my engine-management workload straightforward, while the animated carburetor-heat and elevator-trim controls provided useful visual touches in the cockpit. The tandem seating gives this little taildragger a different character from the side-by-side RV-7.

I found the exterior visibly unfinished in places, consistent with the developer’s acknowledgment of missing rivets and other details. The package combines its own modeling with default Asobo resources and CAP 10 sounds and textures; it also supplies a paintkit, smoke effects and another wing variant. For me, its appeal lies in recreational flying, with real-world systems and handling fidelity explicitly outside its current scope.

deejing’s freeware Van’s Aircraft RV-4 brings a two-seat kitplane to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, with a complete base model, bundled paintkit and smoke effects. This work-in-progress aircraft favors recreational flying rather than a faithful simulation of real-world RV-4 systems and handling.

A Tandem-Seat RV-4 for Recreational Flying

Van’s Aircraft supplies the real RV-4 in kit form for amateur construction. Its low-wing, tailwheel layout and tandem cockpit distinguish it from the side-by-side RV-7; two occupants sit one behind the other, with the pilot flying from the front seat.

For this rendition, deejing specifies an O-360 engine and fixed-pitch propeller. That propeller configuration keeps engine management simpler than a constant-speed installation, since it offers no separate blade-pitch control. However, the developer explicitly cautions that the aircraft does not reproduce real-life operation, so treat it as a casual flying option rather than a procedures or handling trainer.

Model, Effects and Repainting Resources

Complete freeware package: The download includes the base aircraft as well as a full paintkit for creating liveries.
Shared simulator resources: The model uses default Asobo assets and textures, with the developer citing the RV-7 as a comparison for this approach. It also draws sounds and some textures from the CAP 10.
Ongoing exterior work: The developer identifies missing rivets and other details and plans further modeling work. Later updates revise the 3D model and add another wing variant.
Animated details: Release updates include carburetor-heat and elevator-trim animations, alongside changes to the flaps and ailerons.
Smoke and lighting: BlueMesh supplies the smoke FX. The additional lighting effects draw on r9r-dev’s fs2020-vl3-rotax915 project.

The supplied release history lists v1.0.6, dated September 5, 2024, as the current version. Across these revisions, deejing addresses electrical and sound faults while continuing work on the aircraft’s visuals, controls and flight model.

v1.0.1 — March 12, 2024: The initial-release entry records a sound fix.
v1.0.2 — March 18, 2024: Fixed a battery issue and rudder behavior, then updated interior details and textures.
v1.0.3 — April 23, 2024: Updated the BlueMesh smoke, added lights from the r9r-dev project, improved flaps and ailerons, and revised the carburetor-heat animation.
v1.0.4 — April 24, 2024: Fixed missing smoke.
v1.0.5 — May 23, 2024: Addressed missing smoke again, updated the flaps, livery and 3D model, and added elevator-trim animation.
v1.0.6 — September 5, 2024: Fixed the battery, changed the smoke color, added a new wing variant and updated the flight model.

Community Folder Installation

Extract the deejing-aircraft-rv4 folder from the download archive into your simulator’s Community folder. The archive also contains the complete paintkit for repaint work.

MSFS Complete with Base Model

Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
Locate your MSFS Community folder

All MSFS add-ons live in the Community folder. Microsoft Store / Game Pass version: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Community\. Steam version: %APPDATA%\Microsoft Flight Simulator\Packages\Community\. Tip: enable Developer Mode in MSFS to see your exact Community folder path.
Copy the aircraft package into Community

Drag the extracted aircraft folder into your Community folder. Some aircraft require dependencies (like Working Title CJ4, FlyByWire A32NX) — check the readme.
Restart MSFS

Close MSFS completely and relaunch. The new content appears in the Content Manager, on the World Map, or in the aircraft/livery selector.
