To fly Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 with an Xbox controller, select the controller’s default profile, use the left stick for pitch and roll, the triggers for rudder, and the assigned buttons for throttle and brakes. Start in a light trainer, make small inputs, trim often, and practise take-offs and landings with visual assists enabled.
How should I set up the Xbox controller first?
Use the stock Xbox controller profile first; remap controls only after confirming that every axis responds correctly.
- Connect the controller: pair it with an Xbox Series X|S, or connect it to a PC through USB, Bluetooth or supported Xbox Wireless hardware. Our connection, profile and input-conflict checks cover the complete setup process.
- Select the controller profile: open MSFS 2024’s control settings, choose the Xbox controller and load its default preset. Duplicate that preset into a custom profile before changing bindings.
- Test the flight axes: move the left stick and triggers while watching the control-screen response. Pitch, roll and rudder should return cleanly to centre when released.
- Check the essential commands: confirm throttle increase and decrease, brakes, elevator trim, flaps, landing gear and camera controls. Use our labelled default Xbox button map if a command is unclear.
- Remove conflicting inputs: disconnect unused joysticks or clear duplicated axis assignments. Control assists that move the aircraft automatically can also fight your inputs.
These instructions apply to Xbox Series X|S and PC. The PlayStation 5 version of MSFS 2024 uses PlayStation-compatible controllers; a standard Xbox controller is not a native PS5 input device.
How do I take off, fly and land using the controller?
The easiest method is to learn each phase separately in a light trainer such as a Cessna 152 or 172, using calm weather and a runway start.
- Taxi slowly: release the parking brake, add only enough power to start moving, and steer with gentle trigger pressure. Reduce power before turns and use the assigned brake control in short applications.
- Hold the centreline: increase power smoothly and correct yaw with the triggers. Do not steer with large left-stick movements; that moves the ailerons and can tip a wing near the ground.
- Rotate gently: at the aircraft’s published rotation speed, pull the left stick back slightly. Once the correct climb attitude appears, relax it towards centre rather than holding a large input.
- Trim the climb: use elevator trim until the aircraft maintains roughly the desired pitch without constant stick pressure. Spring-centred gamepads make poor trimming especially obvious because the aircraft starts oscillating as the pilot repeatedly pushes and pulls.
- Turn with bank: move the left stick sideways a small amount, then add slight back pressure to maintain altitude. The triggers provide rudder; they are not the primary control for ordinary turns.
- Prepare early for landing: reduce power, lower flaps in stages and establish the recommended approach speed before the runway threshold. With a basic light-aircraft approach, use pitch mainly to control airspeed and power to adjust the descent path.
- Flare and brake: close the throttle near touchdown, ease the stick back slightly and let the main wheels settle. Centre the controls, maintain direction with the triggers and brake only as much as needed.
A controller can hand-fly complex aircraft, but its limited buttons make airliner systems, radios and autopilot panels cumbersome. Use cockpit cursor mode for those controls, then leave cursor mode before resuming manual flight; otherwise the stick may move the pointer or camera instead of the aircraft.
What sensitivity settings make the Xbox controller easier?
The best sensitivity setting is the smallest adjustment that removes twitchiness without creating noticeable delay around the centre.
- Lower pitch and roll sensitivity symmetrically if tiny stick movements produce abrupt attitude changes.
- Add only enough dead zone to stop genuine stick drift. A large dead zone makes the aircraft unresponsive and encourages overcorrection.
- Reduce reactivity cautiously if control movement feels too abrupt; excessive reduction adds lag.
- Tune pitch and roll separately because pitch often needs finer control during rotation and landing.
- Test changes in calm weather with the same aircraft rather than comparing different aircraft or turbulence conditions.

Why is the Xbox controller not steering the aircraft?
Most controller failures come from the wrong active profile, cursor mode, duplicate bindings or an assistance feature overriding the pilot.

A persistent yaw during a single-engine take-off is not necessarily controller drift. Propeller effects and crosswind require progressive rudder correction, so diagnose the controller in calm conditions before adding a large dead zone.
