How do I use Free Roam in Train Sim World?

Learn how to use Free Roam in Train Sim World: spawn a train, set its path, clear red signals, and fix power, direction and placement problems.

To use Free Roam in Train Sim World, choose an installed route, select Free Roam and pick a starting location. Spawn on foot, open the map, place a train on suitable track, set its destination path, then prepare the cab and drive. Signals, junctions and traction-power requirements still apply.

Which Train Sim World versions have Free Roam?

The dedicated Free Roam mode described here was introduced with Train Sim World 4 and carried into later releases. Train Sim World 3 and earlier have other ways to explore routes, but they do not provide the same map-based train spawning and path-setting workflow.

Free Roam requires an installed route. Yards, passing loops and long stretches of open track give you more useful spawning and routing options; our guide to choosing a TSW route can help if you want a varied sandbox.

How do I start and drive in Free Roam?

Start Free Roam from the chosen route, then create your train and route through the in-game map.

  1. Load Free Roam: Open the route selection screen, choose an installed route and select Free Roam. Pick the starting location, time and weather offered by your release.
  2. Open the map: You normally enter the route on foot. Use the displayed map control; the exact button differs between PC and consoles. PC players can check our keyboard and cab-control reference if the map shortcut or interaction controls are unfamiliar.
  3. Choose clear track: Select the rail itself on the map and use the train-spawning command. Pick a straight, unobstructed section long enough for the whole formation. Avoid junctions, portals, buffer stops and very short sidings.
  4. Select the train: Choose an installed locomotive or formation and, where offered, its livery. Check the placement direction before confirming; use the orientation option or respawn the formation if it faces the wrong way.
  5. Set a destination: Select the spawned train on the map, choose the path or destination command, then select a reachable point ahead on connected track. Confirm it and check that the route is shown on the map. This tells the dispatcher which points and signals your train needs.
  6. Take control: Enter the correct cab, sit in the driver’s seat and activate it. Set the master key or desk, direction, brakes and traction power as required by that locomotive. Our beginner setup guide covers the basic driving habits that apply across TSW trains.
  7. Drive under signalling: Wait for a proceed aspect, release the brakes and apply power gradually. Free Roam removes the fixed service objective, not the signalling system. When you reach the end of your chosen path, open the map and set another destination.

Which mode should I choose?

Choose Free Roam for immediate experimentation, Timetable mode for a structured railway service, and Scenario Planner when you want to arrange the activity before loading it.

ModeBest used forMain constraint
Free RoamSpawning owned trains, testing traction and choosing an improvised pathNo fixed service objective; you must create the path yourself
TimetableWorking a scheduled passenger or freight service with established trafficTrain, start time and working are predefined
Scenario PlannerPreparing train starts and instructions before entering the routeRequires more setup than Free Roam

Why won’t my train spawn, move or get a green signal?

Most Free Roam failures come from unsuitable placement, a missing destination path, conflicting trains or an incorrectly prepared cab.

  • Spawn Train is unavailable: Make sure you selected an actual rail rather than a platform, road or scenery object. Try a longer straight section away from points, portals and buffers.
  • The formation will not fit: Long passenger sets and freight trains need more clear track than the map marker suggests. Choose a main line or yard road with room at both ends.
  • The signal stays red: Confirm that the train has a destination ahead of it on connected track. A train facing the wrong direction, another formation blocking the route or an unreachable destination can prevent the dispatcher from reserving a path.
  • The points will not move: Points reserved by the dispatcher or another path may be locked. Remove the conflicting train or destination, then create a shorter path through the junction instead of trying to force the points manually.
  • The train will not move: Check cab activation, reverser direction, brake release, closed doors, traction interlocks, pantograph or third-rail equipment, and the locomotive’s circuit breaker or engine state.
  • The train is missing from the list: Free Roam only shows rolling stock that the game recognises as installed and available to your profile. Confirm the associated content is installed, then restart the simulator if it was added while the game was open.

Can I use any train on any route?

Free Roam supports a broad selection of owned rolling stock, but a train being selectable does not guarantee that it can operate normally on every route.

Diesel traction is usually the simplest cross-route choice because it carries its own power. Electric stock needs a compatible overhead or third-rail supply unless your release offers an Off the Rails compatibility override. That override permits less authentic combinations; without it, match the train to the route’s power system.

Formation length matters as well. A locomotive may work perfectly while its complete train is too long for the chosen siding or destination. When troubleshooting, start with a short formation on clear main-line track, prove that its path and cab setup work, then try the longer consist.
