Run X-Plane 11 in windowed mode, resize or move the simulator, use the Windows shortcut, and fix full-screen or off-screen startup problems.
Open X-Plane 11, select Settings, then Graphics. In Monitor Configuration, change the main display from Full Screen Simulator to Windowed Simulator. X-Plane should switch immediately; close the settings panel, then move, resize or maximise the window normally. On Windows, Alt+Enter can also toggle the two modes.
How do I switch X-Plane 11 from full screen to a window?
The dependable method is to change the display usage setting inside X-Plane 11.
- Open Settings. During a flight, reveal the top menu and select the settings or cog control.
- Select Graphics. Scroll to the Monitor Configuration section if necessary.
- Choose the correct monitor. Change the selector displaying Full Screen Simulator to Windowed Simulator.
- Close the settings panel. Drag the title bar to move the simulator or drag an edge to resize it.
Each connected monitor has its own configuration. A mistake we see constantly is changing the secondary display while the main display remains set to full screen. Check the monitor diagram and alter the display on which X-Plane is actually running.
Can I toggle windowed mode with a keyboard shortcut?
On Windows, press Alt+Enter to toggle X-Plane 11 between full-screen and windowed modes. If the shortcut is intercepted by another program or does nothing, use Monitor Configuration instead.
Keyboard assignments can be changed, so our reference for X-Plane controls and keyboard commands is useful when checking other display-related shortcuts. On macOS or Linux, the settings-panel method avoids conflicts with operating-system window commands.
Why does X-Plane 11 keep starting in full-screen mode?
X-Plane 11 normally remembers its display mode, so repeated full-screen startup usually points to the wrong monitor being configured or a damaged display-preference file. Set the correct monitor to Windowed Simulator, then exit X-Plane normally so the preference can be saved.
If that fails, reset only the stored screen configuration:
- Exit X-Plane completely.
- Open
X-Plane 11/Output/preferences. If you cannot find the simulator root, use our instructions for locating the X-Plane 11 installation folder. - Rename
X-Plane Screen Res.prf. Add a backup suffix rather than deleting it permanently. - Restart X-Plane 11. It will create fresh display preferences; return to Graphics and select Windowed Simulator again.
This does not remove aircraft or scenery, but recheck the monitor layout, resolution, field of view and other graphics choices after resetting the file.
What if the X-Plane window opens off-screen?
An off-screen X-Plane window usually retains coordinates from a monitor that was disconnected or rearranged. On Windows, focus X-Plane from the taskbar and use Win+Shift+Left/Right to move it between displays; Alt+Enter may also bring it back as a full-screen window so you can reconfigure it.
If neither works, reset X-Plane Screen Res.prf using the steps above. For wide-screen and multi-display layouts, our guidance on resolution, scaling and ultrawide flight-sim window sizing covers the next configuration decisions.
Does windowed mode affect X-Plane 11 performance?
Windowed mode does not reduce image quality by itself; performance mainly depends on how many pixels X-Plane is rendering. A smaller window can reduce GPU load, while a maximised high-resolution window may perform much like full screen. Operating-system compositing and synchronisation can still make frame pacing differ, so test both modes on the same route and aircraft.
- Choose windowed mode when you need easy access to charts, utilities or another monitor.
- Choose full screen when X-Plane occupies an entire display and you want the least distracting presentation.
X-Plane 11 does not provide a separate borderless-windowed selector in Monitor Configuration. Maximising Windowed Simulator is the closest native option, although the title bar and taskbar behaviour depends on the operating system.
