FSX & FSX: Steam Edition 5 min read

How do I reactivate FSX after changing PC hardware?

Ian Stephens
In short

Reactivate FSX after a motherboard, CPU or PC change. Follow the right steps for boxed and Steam editions, and fix rejected keys or licence errors.

After changing major PC hardware, launch FSX and complete its activation prompt again. Boxed FSX needs the product key for the installed edition; FSX: Steam Edition is authorised through your Steam account instead. If FSX still runs without prompting, it remains activated and no manual reactivation is required.

Does every hardware change require FSX reactivation?

No; replacing RAM, a graphics card or a single drive does not automatically mean FSX will request activation. A motherboard replacement, a new PC, a fresh Windows installation or several simultaneous hardware changes are more likely to make boxed FSX treat the system as a different computer.

Microsoft does not publish a useful hardware-change threshold for FSX, so let the simulator tell you. Do not reinstall a working copy merely because hardware changed.

How do I reactivate boxed FSX?

For boxed FSX Standard, Deluxe or Gold, use the original product key and the activation choices presented by the simulator.

  1. Confirm which edition is installed. A Standard key will not activate Deluxe, and an Acceleration key is not the base FSX key. Gold Edition packages normally provide separate keys for the base simulator and Acceleration.
  2. Start FSX with elevated permission once. Right-click its shortcut or fsx.exe, select the administrator option, and accept the activation prompt. This helps when Windows is preventing FSX from writing its licence state.
  3. Enter the matching product key if requested. Copy it carefully from the original packaging and distinguish similar characters. Never post the key in a forum or screenshot.
  4. Use an activation method offered by the wizard. Try online activation first. If that fails and the wizard displays another official method, follow that route rather than repeatedly reinstalling the simulator.
  5. Restart FSX normally. Load a flight and confirm that it no longer reports trial operation or asks for activation again.

If this is also a fresh installation, follow our standard activation sequence for boxed FSX and Acceleration. There is no normal deactivation button in FSX, and uninstalling the old copy does not guarantee that an activation counter will be reset immediately. Remove the previous installation where required by your licence, but do not expect that alone to clear a server-side rejection.

How is FSX: Steam Edition reactivated?

FSX: Steam Edition does not use the boxed simulator’s product-key activation system. Install the Steam client, sign in to the account that owns FSX: Steam Edition, install the simulator from that library and launch it there.

  • A boxed FSX key cannot be converted into or entered as a Steam licence.
  • If a product-key window appears while launching Steam Edition, check whether it belongs to a commercial add-on rather than FSX itself.
  • If boxed FSX and Steam Edition are both installed, verify which fsx.exe or shortcut you opened before changing files or licence settings.

Why is my FSX key rejected after a hardware upgrade?

A valid key can be rejected because it belongs to the wrong FSX component, has reached an activation check, or cannot be read or saved correctly by the rebuilt Windows installation.

  • Wrong key: use the base FSX key for Standard or Deluxe and the separate Acceleration key only when Acceleration requests it.
  • Typing error: re-enter the key manually and check easily confused letters and numbers.
  • Hardware-transfer check: a major change can make the activation service see another computer even when the old drive was cloned.
  • Permission problem: FSX may accept activation but fail to retain it after the next restart.
  • Old licence data: copied registry entries or licensing folders from another Windows installation can leave the new system with mismatched information.

For an activation-limit or invalid-key response, use our diagnosis for boxed FSX keys refused after a hardware move. If Windows reports an out of date license error, follow the specific repair steps for that FSX licensing message rather than entering the key repeatedly.

When activation succeeds but disappears after restarting FSX, investigate folder and registry permissions. Our explanation of ResetXDirectorySecurity.exe and FSX permissions covers that narrower fault. Avoid registry cleaners, copied activation files and unofficial bypasses; they can damage a legitimate installation without resolving the hardware mismatch.

Will FSX add-ons also need reactivation?

Some commercial aircraft, scenery and utilities use their own hardware-based licensing, entirely separate from FSX. They may request their original serial numbers or account authorisation after a motherboard change or fresh Windows installation, even when FSX itself opens normally.

Freeware usually has no activation requirement. Copying an old SimObjects or scenery folder can restore files, but it does not restore licences, supporting components or installer-created settings for commercial products.
