Use X-Plane 11 pushback with the default shortcut, steering controls or BetterPushback, and fix brakes, chocks and key-binding problems.
In X-Plane 11, release the parking brake and press Shift+P to toggle the simulator’s default pushback. Use your assigned yaw or rudder control to steer, then press Shift+P again where you want to stop and set the parking brake. If the shortcut is unassigned, bind the pushback command in Keyboard settings.
How to use the default X-Plane 11 pushback
The stock pushback system is sufficient for moving away from a straightforward stand and requires no plug-in.
- Prepare the aircraft: keep the throttles at idle, clear any external equipment and remove wheel chocks through the aircraft’s tablet, EFB or ground-services menu if fitted.
- Release the brakes: disengage the parking brake and take your feet off the toe brakes. Even a small brake-axis input can prevent movement.
- Start pushback: press
Shift+P. Allow the aircraft to begin moving without applying throttle or reverse thrust. - Steer gently: use your rudder pedals, joystick yaw axis or assigned yaw keys. Small inputs work best. Remember that when the nose moves left during reverse travel, the tail swings right.
- Stop and secure: press
Shift+Pagain, wait for the aircraft to stop, centre the steering and set the parking brake.
The default system does not give you precise route planning, so begin turning early and watch the wings and tail around terminal buildings, service vehicles and adjacent stands.
Which X-Plane 11 pushback method should I use?
Use the stock command for a quick push, an aircraft’s integrated controls when supplied, or BetterPushback when you need a planned route and accurate final heading.

Do not activate two methods together. If an aircraft has its own pushback page or BetterPushback integration, avoid pressing Shift+P at the same time; competing systems can cause the tug to disconnect, the nosewheel to oscillate or the aircraft to remain locked in place.
Why is X-Plane 11 pushback not working?
Most X-Plane 11 pushback failures are caused by brakes or chocks, a missing key assignment, or a conflict between the stock command and an add-on.
- The shortcut does nothing: open Settings, select Keyboard and search for
pushback. Assign the start/stop pushback command and check that the active aircraft profile contains that assignment. - The aircraft will not move: release the parking brake, remove chocks and check that neither toe-brake axis is producing an unwanted input. Recalibrate pedals if the brake indicators do not return fully to zero.
- An add-on aircraft remains locked: inspect its EFB or ground-services panel for chocks, ground locks or a separate pushback system. Sophisticated aircraft can replace the stock X-Plane behaviour.
- A plug-in appears but cannot push: stop any other pushback service and reload the aircraft if necessary. Also check that the plug-in was not placed inside an extra, duplicated folder.
- The aircraft turns the wrong way: concentrate on the required tail movement rather than treating pushback like forward taxiing. Use small steering inputs and correct early.
Can I start the engines during pushback?
X-Plane 11 allows engine starts during pushback, but the aircraft checklist and chosen tug system should determine the sequence. BetterPushback and some aircraft-specific systems issue brake and engine-clearance instructions; follow those prompts and never use thrust to assist the tug.
For a simpler procedure, leave the engines off, complete the push, stop the tug, set the parking brake and then start the engines. This removes the risk of advancing a throttle while the aircraft is still attached or moving backwards.
