Learn how X-Plane 11 ATC handles flight plans, clearances, taxi, hand-offs and approaches, with fixes for silence and missed calls.
X-Plane 11’s built-in ATC is a menu-driven controller: file an IFR flight plan, tune the assigned COM frequency, request clearance and taxi, then acknowledge each instruction and frequency hand-off. It provides spoken and text calls from the stand to landing, but it does not programme or fly the route for you.
How do I use ATC in X-Plane 11?
The stock system works best for a structured IFR flight between controlled airports. If the controller terminology is unfamiliar, our explanation of the clearance-to-landing ATC sequence shows where each call fits.
- Start at a controlled airport. Choose a parking stand rather than beginning on the runway. Airports without clearance, ground or tower facilities cannot provide the complete ATC sequence.
- Open the ATC window. Press
EnterorReturn, which is the usual default binding. If that does nothing, search the Keyboard settings for the ATC command and assign another key; our X-Plane 11 keyboard-command reference is useful when checking altered bindings. - File an IFR flight plan. Enter the departure and destination ICAO identifiers, cruising altitude and route. Use recognised waypoint, navaid and airway identifiers rather than airport names or written instructions.
- Contact clearance delivery. Tune the listed frequency on the active COM radio, normally COM1. Selecting a frequency shown in the ATC window may tune it for you; otherwise set it through the aircraft’s radio panel. If the airport has no clearance-delivery frequency, the initial call may go to ground.
- Acknowledge the clearance. X-Plane 11 does not recognise your microphone. Select the appropriate readback from the ATC menu, note the assigned altitude, runway and transponder code, and respond promptly.
- Request taxi. After clearance, contact ground and request taxi. Follow the assigned route, stop at hold-short points and treat any displayed taxi arrows as guidance rather than permission to enter a runway.
- Contact tower and depart. Switch frequencies when instructed, request take-off and fly the assigned heading and altitude. Do not turn towards the GPS course merely because its magenta line differs from an ATC vector.
- Follow every hand-off. During departure, cruise and arrival, tune the new frequency and acknowledge each instruction. ATC may issue headings, altitude changes and approach vectors before transferring you to the destination tower.
Does ATC programme the FMS or fly the aircraft?
No. The ATC flight plan and the route loaded into the aircraft’s GPS or FMS are separate. Filing with ATC does not insert waypoints into the avionics, and loading an FMS plan does not automatically file it with ATC.
For predictable results, put the same route in both places. You must select the appropriate autopilot modes, change heading and altitude, manage the radios and fly the approach. If ATC vectors you away from the programmed route, the clearance takes priority until you are directed back towards it.
Why is X-Plane 11 ATC not responding?
Most failures come from the wrong active COM frequency, an unfiled plan or a missed menu response rather than a broken controller.

Is X-Plane 11 ATC suitable for VFR flying?
X-Plane 11’s built-in controller is best treated as an offline IFR training aid, not a complete simulation of free-form VFR flight following. It is useful for practising the order of clearances, readbacks, taxi calls and frequency changes, but its phraseology and routing can be rigid.
Human-controlled online ATC offers more flexible traffic handling and realistic interaction, but requires separate software, controller availability and confident voice communication. The stock system is the simpler choice when flying alone or learning the basic radio sequence.
Is X-Plane 11 ATC the same as X-Plane 12 ATC?
