Mount flight simulator controls to a desk with their supplied clamps whenever possible. Place the yoke or joystick in line with your seat, support each clamp on a flat, strong section of desktop, protect the finish with a thin non-slip pad, tighten only until rigid, then secure the cables and test every axis.
For a general PC flight simulator setup, the correct mounting method depends on the control's weight, the forces applied to it and the desk's construction. A light joystick and a force-feedback yoke should not be treated as equivalent loads.
Check the desk before attaching anything
A safe mount starts with a rigid desktop, enough clamp clearance and an unobstructed underside edge.
- Measure the total thickness: Include any protective pad, bevelled edge or raised trim. The clamp must open beyond this measurement while retaining enough thread to tighten securely.
- Inspect underneath: Desk aprons, drawers, cable trays and metal crossbars often prevent the lower jaw from sitting flat. This is one of the most common reasons a yoke clamp slips.
- Check the material: Solid timber and good plywood usually accept clamps well. Thin particle board, MDF and hollow-core tops can crush or flex, so they may need a load-spreading plate.
- Treat glass cautiously: Do not clamp to or drill a glass desktop unless both the desk and control manufacturers explicitly approve it.
- Check the desk itself: Tight controls are no help if the desk rocks or bows. Tighten the desk frame and place heavy controls near a supported edge rather than the middle of a long span.

Which mounting method should I use?
Use the manufacturer's clamp for most removable desk installations, a clamped base plate when the desk edge is unsuitable, and through-bolts only for a permanent installation.

Where should the yoke, joystick and throttle sit?
The primary control should align with your normal seated position while allowing its complete range of movement without striking you, the desk or the monitor.
- Yoke: Centre it on the chair and screen. Leave room for the shaft to move fully forwards and backwards, and check that the clamp does not hit your knees.
- Joystick: Mount it centrally or as a side-stick according to the aircraft style you fly. Your forearm should remain relaxed instead of reaching upwards or outwards.
- Throttle: Place it where every lever, detent and button can be reached without twisting your shoulder. Confirm that the levers do not hit a monitor stand or wall at full travel.
- Rudder pedals: Align them with the chair rather than the desk. Brace them against a wall or fixed rail, or use a high-friction mat; otherwise both the pedals and a wheeled chair may slide during braking.
How do I secure the controls properly?
Position and test the hardware before tightening it, then route the cables only after the final location is fixed.
- Disconnect the equipment. Unplug USB and power leads so they cannot be trapped, stretched or pulled from a socket while you work.
- Mark your seated centreline. Sit in your normal flying position and mark the centre of the chair on the desk with removable tape.
- Check full travel. Hold each unit in place and move the yoke, stick and levers through their complete range. Check monitor clearance, keyboard access and knee room.
- Clean the contact surfaces. Remove dust and polish from the desktop and clamp pads. If the finish needs protection, use a thin, firm, non-slip sheet; thick foam compresses and encourages movement.
- Seat every clamp jaw flat. Both the upper and lower pads must contact the desk fully. On dual-clamp yokes, tighten each side gradually and evenly.
- Hand-tighten until rigid. Stop when the unit no longer shifts during normal control input. Do not use pliers or excessive force unless the manufacturer's instructions call for a tool, as overtightening can crush the desktop or damage the clamp.
- Route the cables. Leave a slack loop near moving controls, keep leads away from clamp screws and yoke shafts, and attach them to the desk frame rather than leaving their weight hanging from USB sockets.
- Test before flying. Verify that all axes return to centre and reach their endpoints. Windows users can follow our axis and button testing checks before creating bindings in the simulator.
Physical mounting can slightly alter how a control centres, particularly if its case has been twisted by uneven clamps. Recheck calibration after moving or remounting it. Microsoft Flight Simulator users can then create control profiles and remove duplicate axis assignments.
Why do flight simulator desk clamps keep slipping?
Desk clamps usually slip because a jaw is not sitting flat, the protective layer is too soft, or the desktop is flexing under load.
- Move the control away from a bevel, underside support or cable tray that leaves part of the jaw unsupported.
- Replace towels, thick foam and soft mouse mats with a thin high-friction pad.
- Clean dusty rubber pads and glossy desk polish from the contact area.
- Tighten dual clamps equally so the unit is not pulled sideways.
- Add a rigid load-spreading plate if the desktop visibly bends or the clamp leaves an indentation.
- If a force-feedback control still moves, use its manufacturer-approved hard-mount holes and a suitably strong desk or cockpit frame rather than applying more clamp pressure.
Can I drill mounting holes in the desk?
You can drill a solid, replaceable desktop when you want a permanent mount, but only after checking its construction, hidden cables and the control manufacturer's mounting pattern.
Remove all electronics before drilling; never use the control itself as a drill guide. Through-bolts with broad washers or a backing plate spread repeated control loads better than screws driven directly into particle board. Avoid drilling glass, stone, thin hollow tops or any desk containing built-in power hardware.
After installation, inspect the clamps and bolts periodically. Tighten loose hardware, but do not keep increasing pressure to compensate for a weak or damaged desktop.
