It was when Aeroflot decided to replace its elderly piston engined airliners with powerful turbine-powered aircraft, Yakovlev Yak-40 found its way into the Soviet state airline's fleet. Although Yak-40s did not focus primarily on high speed, they were designed specifically to ensure safe operations out of airports that were not well equipped. As a low-winged cantilever monoplane, Yak-40 proved a very useful passenger airliner that went on to gain the enviable record of being the maiden regional jet transport aircraft in the world. It's quite astonishing t note that Yak-40s operated by Aeroflot registered an incredible passenger traffic of 354 million by 1993, which by no means is a mean achievement.
