This fictional repaint brings a refreshing look to the classic Piper J-3 Cub within Microsoft Flight Simulator X. This lightweight taildragger has captivated aviation enthusiasts for generations, and its simplistic control scheme remains a favorite for aspiring virtual pilots seeking an authentic stick-and-rudder experience. Created by A2A Simulations, the J-3 Cub payware model is required for this modification. Repaint by Urs Burkhardt.

Installation Steps

  • Extract the contents of the downloaded ZIP archive to any temporary location of your choosing.
  • Copy the enclosed folder structures into your primary SimObjects/Airplanes directory under your main FSX path. Allow any prompted merges.
  • Once copied, use a text editor (for example, Notepad) to open the relevant aircraft configuration file(s). Insert the required entries below to activate the new texture set.

Standard Wheel Configuration

To enable the basic wheel-based variant, go to \FSX-path\SimObjects\Airplanes\A2A_PiperJ3\ and edit aircraft.cfg. Below the final [fltsim.X] block, place the following (updating XX with the next available number):

[fltsim.XX]
title=A2A Piper Cub CF-PCW
sim=PiperJ3
model=
panel=
sound=
texture=CF-PCW
kb_checklists=
kb_reference=
atc_id=CF-PCW
atc_id_color=
ui_manufacturer="A2A Piper"
ui_type="J-3 Cub"
ui_variation="CF-PCW"
ui_typerole="Single Engine Prop"
ui_createdby="A2A Simulations Inc."
description="The Piper Cub embodies the romance of flying. Its design highlights the fundamentals of pilot-aircraft harmony, and it remains an icon of pure stick and rudder precision."

Tundra Tire Version

For enhanced off-airport operations, head to \FSX-path\SimObjects\Airplanes\A2A_PiperJ3_t\ and open aircraft.cfg. Insert this section, using the next available XX index:

[fltsim.XX]
title=A2A Piper Cub Tundra CF-PCW
sim=PiperJ3t
model=
panel=
sound=
texture=CF-PCW
kb_checklists=
kb_reference=
atc_id=CF-PCW

ui_manufacturer="A2A Piper"
ui_type="J-3 Cub w/tundras"
ui_variation="CF-PCW"
ui_typerole="Single Engine Prop"
ui_createdby="A2A Simulations Inc."
description="The Piper Cub embodies the romance of flying. Its design highlights the fundamentals of pilot-aircraft harmony, and it remains an icon of pure stick and rudder precision."

Floatplane Setup

If you prefer water landings, locate \FSX-path\SimObjects\Airplanes\A2A_PiperJ3_f\ and edit aircraft.cfg. Once again, add these lines below the last [fltsim.X], replacing X with the subsequent number:

[fltsim.X]
title=A2A Piper Cub floats CF-PCW
sim=PiperJ3f
model=
panel=
sound=
texture=CF-PCW
kb_checklists=
kb_reference=

ui_manufacturer="A2A Piper"
ui_type="J-3 Cub w/floats"
ui_variation="CF-PCW"
ui_typerole="Single Engine Prop"
ui_createdby="A2A Simulations Inc."
description="The Piper Cub embodies the romance of flying. Its design highlights the fundamentals of pilot-aircraft harmony, and it remains an icon of pure stick and rudder precision."

Ski-Fitted Variant

To explore snowy or icy runways, work with the \FSX-path\SimObjects\Airplanes\A2A_PiperJ3_s\ folder. Open aircraft.cfg and append this clearly defined entry, adjusting XX to the next index:

[fltsim.XX]
title=A2A Piper Cub Ski CF-PCW

panel=
sound=
texture=CF-PCW
kb_checklists=

ui_manufacturer="A2A Piper"
ui_type="J-3 Cub w/skis"
ui_variation="CF-PCW"
ui_typerole="Single Engine Prop"
ui_createdby="A2A Simulations Inc."
description="The Piper Cub embodies the romance of flying. Its design highlights the fundamentals of pilot-aircraft harmony, and it remains an icon of pure stick and rudder precision."
