This freeware package replicates the Lockheed T-1A Sea Star—a US Navy jet trainer derived from the Lockheed T-33 lineage—for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. It originates from Tim Conrad’s T-33 model and incorporates updates by Mark Rooks of RDG Aircraft. Enthusiasts will discover a fully revamped cockpit, visually authentic effects, and a historical tribute to the pioneering heritage of this naval aircraft. The included model remains faithful to the original airframe, powered by the time-honored Allison J33 engine, and offers a realistic training jet environment that echoes the transition from the earlier P-80 series to dedicated military trainers.

Historical Evolution and Design Lineage

Lockheed’s development efforts date back to the P-80 Shooting Star concept, which first lifted off in early 1944. The T-33 that soon followed became the cornerstone for training new pilots during the post-war jet era. From that foundation emerged the T2V SeaStar, later redesignated as the T-1A Sea Star, marking Lockheed’s refined focus on naval pilot instruction. This single-engine, turbojet-driven craft joined US Navy service in the late 1950s and boasted the adaptability needed for carrier-capable operations. In this freeware release, the navy variant is meticulously reproduced and tailored to bring classic jet flight to enthusiasts worldwide.

Key Technical Highlights

Advanced Cockpits

This add-on showcases a newly enhanced two-dimensional panel and a refined three-dimensional virtual cockpit, replicating operational flight instruments with functional gauges adapted from Tim Conrad’s F-5 package. Both the pilot and instructor positions are carefully rendered for immersive training scenarios.

Accurate Engine Effects

An optional smoke effect—simulating the Allison J33’s distinct exhaust trail—is bundled in the package. Users can deploy this feature to add realistic visual immersion, or simply omit it if desired.

Visual Enhancements and Textures

Mark Rooks of RDG Aircraft has applied custom textures that complement the model’s naval heritage. These details capture authentic markings from the United States Navy, emphasizing the Sea Star’s role in training generations of carrier-based aviators.

Installation Procedure

  1. Begin by creating a backup of your existing simulator files.
  2. Extract the downloaded package onto your desktop or a directory of your choice. You should locate a folder labeled “Navy T-1A.zip.”
  3. Move the unzipped aircraft folder—containing the aircraft.cfg, .air file, Model, Sound, Panel, and Texture folders—into your “Airplanes” directory. This is typically found at:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes
  4. Open the included Gauges folder and copy all files into your main FSX Gauges folder. This folder resides under:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Gauges
  5. For smoke visuals, take the contents of the Effects folder and merge them into your simulator’s Effects folder located at:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Effects

Those who prefer to disregard the engine smoke visuals can simply omit adding the contained effect files.
