Designed by Tim Conrad and enhanced by Mark Rooks (RDG Aircraft), it showcases new textures, a refined cockpit experience, and realistic effects inspired by the original platform. Known as “The Ace Maker,” this T-33 honors the training heritage it provided to countless United States Air Force pilots.
Historical Inspiration and Aircraft Background
The T-33 traces its lineage to the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star, one of America’s earliest operational jet fighters. When it became evident that streamlined training would be critical in transitioning emerging pilots to jet-powered flight, specialists at Lockheed adapted the single-seat design into a two-seat variant. As the T-33, it quickly solidified its role in the USAF by instructing newcomers on takeoff procedures, jet handling, and essential instrument flight. Affectionately dubbed “The Ace Maker” for its significant impact on pilot development, the T-33 continued to serve for decades and remains a treasured part of aviation history.
Notable Features
- Custom 2D and 3D cockpit: Fully operational panel layouts offer a detailed environment that simmers can explore during flight operations.
- Cockpit instrumentation: Retains gauges derived from Tim Conrad’s F-5 suite for seamless integration with the T-33’s unique engine and systems readouts.
- New visual effects: Include optional engine smoke and enhanced exterior details that replicate real-life vintage jet characteristics.
- Authentic textures: Updated paintwork by Mark Rooks (RDG Aircraft) embodies this USAF trainer’s distinct look, complete with accurate markings.
- Comprehensive documentation: Package includes historical context and reference images that highlight the T-33’s operational service.
Installation Process
This add-on is packaged for immediate use in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Before installing, back up any existing files to protect your current setup. Once unzipped, confirm that the primary aircraft folder contains six essential subfolders (CFG, AIR file, Model, Sound, Panel, Texture). Follow these steps:
- Extract or unpack the “USAF T-33” zip to a temporary location, such as your desktop.
- Move the entire “USAF T-33” folder (with the six subfolders) into the default aircraft directory typically found at: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes.
- Place the provided gauges in the main FSX\Gauges folder to incorporate the T-33’s instruments. These gauges come from Tim Conrad’s F-5 configuration, repurposed here for the T-33 cockpit layout.
- Insert the optional effects (engine smoke) into the FSX\Effects folder. If you prefer a smoke-free flight environment, you may skip this step.
