This freeware release brings one of the earliest light helicopters into Microsoft Flight Simulator X, complete with skid-based landing gear, fully operational cockpit components, and carefully refined gauge compatibility. It represents a faithful depiction of the Bell 47 model (FBXXJ variant) created by M. Jean-Marie Mermaz, further optimized by Danny Garnier for the FSX environment.

Historic Rotary-Wing Details

The Bell 47, which had its roots in the mid-1940s, gained widespread recognition among flight enthusiasts and military branches for its versatility and robust design. This particular iteration maintains the authentic canopy framework and rotor assembly, offering a distinct open-structure experience. Skid landing gear was employed on many variants to provide stable touchdown capabilities on uneven terrain, and this FSX version replicates that feature precisely.

Precision Updates for FSX

Danny Garnier employed FS Panel Studio to refine the instrument panel and ensure every gauge operates effectively within FSX. This initiative includes modifications to the original Gmax project, making the helicopter fully compatible with modern rotorcraft simulation requirements. Autopilot is intentionally omitted to preserve a hands-on flight experience, though standard navigational support remains in place.

Technical Adjustments and Gauges

All gauges have been tested with current sim standards. The cockpit environment includes clear readouts for engine RPM, rotor torque, and other essential performance metrics. Each needle and dial uses FSX-supported dependencies, ensuring stable data display. Transparent canopy panels deliver an immersive view, particularly during low-altitude hover maneuvers or approach sequences over landing pads.

Moving the Files into Position

To install, place the provided folder named [bell47gmaxskid] into the SimObjects > Rotorcraft directory of your FSX installation. This action will correctly index the Bell 47 within your select aircraft menu.

For those who prefer direct cockpit interactions, keep in mind Danny Garnier has integrated a fully working virtual cockpit (VC). It streamlines flight control by allowing mouse-based toggles and switch activations. A functional VC helps highlight each system, from engine start to rotor brake operation.

Developer Credits

The original framework for this helicopter was devised by M. Jean-Marie Mermaz, whose Gmax work underpins the visual model. Danny Garnier then updated the aircraft for FSX usage and ensured systemic compatibility for all included gauges. He is based in Bourbon-Lancy, France, and actively revises multiple freeware releases to keep them current.

Enthusiasts seeking additional rotorcraft or fixed-wing conversions by Danny Garnier can explore his catalog, which often features updated VCs and gauge sets in harmony with Microsoft Flight Simulator X parameters. His dedication to refining older models guarantees a broader variety of helicopters and aircraft remain available for modern simulation fans worldwide.

Anyone with this model has all gauges...seems to have torque and attitude control bezel missing?

Quality helicopter. However, I keep hearing the M*A*S*H theme every time I fly it.
