Why is ChasePlane not starting or activating in MSFS?

Ian Stephens
In short

Fix ChasePlane not starting or activating in MSFS 2020 or 2024 by checking its integration, launch order, SimConnect, permissions and licence access.

ChasePlane usually fails to start or activate in Microsoft Flight Simulator because the wrong MSFS integration is installed, the simulator is not yet loaded into a flight, SimConnect cannot connect, Windows permissions differ, or licence validation is blocked. Use the matching MSFS 2020/2024 integration and launch both programs at the same privilege level.

Which kind of ChasePlane activation failure is it?

ChasePlane licence activation and ChasePlane camera activation are separate checks. A licence failure concerns your account or network access; a camera activation failure means the app has started but cannot attach to the running simulator or aircraft.

How do I fix ChasePlane not starting in MSFS?

Work through these checks in order, testing ChasePlane after each one rather than reinstalling Microsoft Flight Simulator immediately.

  1. Confirm the platform and simulator version. The ChasePlane application discussed here runs on Windows PC; it cannot be installed natively on Xbox or PlayStation. Install the component intended for MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024 rather than reusing the other simulator's integration. Our version-specific ChasePlane installation and integration checks cover the correct choices and launch order.
  2. Load a normal flight completely. Reach the cockpit or external aircraft view before expecting ChasePlane to connect. Sitting at the MSFS main menu may leave a companion app waiting because the aircraft and camera systems are not yet available.
  3. Clear a stuck process. Close ChasePlane, inspect Task Manager for an existing ChasePlane process and end it if necessary. Reopen the app once; repeatedly launching it can leave several failed or hidden instances.
  4. Match Windows privilege levels. A mistake we see constantly is setting ChasePlane to always run as administrator while MSFS runs normally. Start both as a standard user. Running both elevated can be used as a short diagnostic, but permanent administrator access should not be necessary.
  5. Verify the simulator integration. Repair or reinstall ChasePlane's MSFS component using its installer rather than copying old files between MSFS 2020 and 2024. If MSFS offered Safe Mode after a crash, close it and start in Normal Mode; Safe Mode suppresses third-party packages that ChasePlane may require.
  6. Check Windows Security. Look for a quarantined or blocked ChasePlane executable, connector or supporting component. Restore or allow a file only when it came from the trusted installer, and add a narrow exception instead of disabling protection globally.
  7. Test the SimConnect connection. ChasePlane relies on the interface MSFS provides to companion applications. Our explanation of what SimConnect does between MSFS and companion apps helps distinguish a simulator connection failure from a camera problem. If the app remains waiting, use the ordered SimConnect repair checks before installing random legacy runtimes.
  8. Temporarily isolate other camera tools. Close other camera managers, head-tracking utilities and companion apps, then restart MSFS and ChasePlane. SimConnect supports multiple clients, but two tools can still write conflicting camera positions or commands.

Why does ChasePlane open but not activate?

If ChasePlane opens but cannot attach to the aircraft, the problem is usually the integration or SimConnect rather than the main application. Confirm that a flight is loaded, the correct aircraft is detected and the installed connector matches MSFS 2020 or 2024.

A connection that works with one simulator generation but not the other strongly points to a mismatched integration. A failure affecting several unrelated companion apps points instead to SimConnect, a custom connection configuration, firewall filtering or the simulator not completing its flight load.

What if ChasePlane licence activation fails?

A licence error should be treated separately from a waiting-for-simulator message. Confirm that ChasePlane is signed into the account associated with the licence, then set the Windows date, time and time zone correctly; an inaccurate clock can invalidate secure licence checks.

Temporarily test without a VPN, proxy or aggressive network filter, but do not disable security permanently. If the message specifically reports no entitlement, an activation limit or an account problem, reinstalling ChasePlane or MSFS will not correct the account record. Preserve the exact error text rather than reducing it to “not working”.

Why is the ChasePlane camera not moving after activation?

An active connection with an unresponsive camera usually means another input is overriding ChasePlane. Return to a standard cockpit or external view, pause head tracking and remove duplicate MSFS camera commands from the buttons or axes assigned to ChasePlane.

If the viewpoint moves briefly and then snaps back, another camera utility or head-tracking input is continuously taking control. If ChasePlane does not list the aircraft at all, return to the integration and SimConnect checks; control bindings cannot fix a missing aircraft connection.

Once the connection works, follow our ChasePlane camera-view setup and conflict checks to create aircraft-specific views without native MSFS shortcuts overriding them.

Should I reinstall ChasePlane or Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Reinstall ChasePlane only after process, security and permission checks fail; reinstalling the whole simulator should be the last resort. Choose the repair according to the symptom:

  • Repair the ChasePlane integration when the app opens but cannot detect one MSFS generation.
  • Repair SimConnect when multiple companion applications cannot see a loaded flight or ChasePlane remains waiting.
  • Reinstall ChasePlane when its desktop application will not open or repeatedly closes before showing its interface.
  • Repair MSFS itself only when the simulator also fails to load flights or its own core systems are damaged.

Back up or export any saved ChasePlane views before a clean application reinstall if the installed version provides that option. Reinstallation does not fix mismatched permissions, Safe Mode, blocked licence validation or conflicting camera bindings, so those checks should come first.
