Why is VR not working in Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Ian Stephens
In short

Fix VR not working in Microsoft Flight Simulator: check PC VR mode, OpenXR, controls, black screens, crashes and headset detection.

VR usually fails in Microsoft Flight Simulator because the headset is not in PC VR mode, the wrong OpenXR runtime is active, the VR command is unbound, or an add-on or overlay is interfering. Start the headset software first, select the correct OpenXR runtime, launch MSFS, then use the assigned Toggle VR command.

Does your MSFS platform support VR?

The first check is whether your simulator edition, platform and headset connection actually support VR.

  • PC: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 support compatible PC VR headsets through OpenXR. A standalone headset such as a Meta Quest must be connected in PC VR mode; it cannot run the PC simulator as a native standalone headset application.
  • Xbox Series X|S: MSFS does not support VR on Xbox, even if the headset can connect to another device.
  • PlayStation: MSFS 2020 was never released on PlayStation. MSFS 2024 is available on PS5 and PS5 Pro, with PSVR2 support arriving through a free update in 2026; the base PS5 release alone does not automatically provide VR.

If the headset or connection method is uncertain, check our guide to headsets and connection methods compatible with MSFS before changing simulator settings.

How do I start Microsoft Flight Simulator in VR?

MSFS should be launched only after the headset, its software and the appropriate PC VR connection are working.

  1. Test the headset outside MSFS. Confirm that its home environment or PC VR dashboard tracks your head correctly. Fix a disconnected cable, failed wireless session or headset sleep state before opening the simulator.
  2. Select the correct OpenXR runtime. Use the runtime associated with the connection path: the headset vendor's runtime for its native PC connection, or SteamVR when that is the intended OpenXR path. Changing this normally requires restarting MSFS.
  3. Avoid competing runtimes. Do not start SteamVR merely because MSFS was purchased through Steam. The game storefront and the OpenXR runtime are separate choices.
  4. Launch the simulator normally. Wait until the main menu has loaded and the headset connection remains stable.
  5. Activate VR mode. In Controls Options, search for VR and confirm that Toggle VR and Reset VR View have bindings. Ctrl+Tab is commonly assigned to the VR toggle, but custom control profiles can remove or replace it.
  6. Centre the view. Sit in the normal flying position, use Reset VR View, then load or resume the flight.

Our complete MSFS VR launch and view setup covers misplaced cockpits, blank headset displays and missing VR audio without repeating those steps here.

What does each VR failure mean?

Why does MSFS say no VR headset is detected?

A detection error usually means Windows can see the headset hardware, but MSFS cannot open the active OpenXR runtime.

  1. Exit MSFS and close all headset, SteamVR and vendor runtime applications.
  2. Reconnect the headset and establish its PC VR session.
  3. Open the software for the runtime you intend to use and make it the active OpenXR runtime.
  4. Confirm that the headset tracks correctly in that runtime before starting MSFS.
  5. Launch MSFS and try the VR toggle again.

For a wired headset, connect DisplayPort and USB directly where possible and test another suitable USB port rather than an unpowered hub. For wireless PC VR, first prove that the headset can maintain its PC session; a working standalone home screen does not prove that Link or another wireless PC connection is active.

If detection still fails, follow our focused OpenXR and headset-detection checks. They cover drivers, runtime selection, connection order and controls in more detail.

How do I fix a black screen or crash when VR starts?

A black headset or crash at the moment VR activates points to the runtime, graphics driver, an injected VR tool or simulator content rather than the VR key binding.

  • Disable overlays and OpenXR layers: Temporarily turn off recording overlays, performance overlays, upscalers and third-party VR toolkits. Re-enable them one at a time after native VR works.
  • Test without add-ons: Use Safe Mode if MSFS offers it after a crash, or temporarily move packages out of the Community folder. Aircraft and cockpit modifications can fail only when their VR view is loaded.
  • Restore conservative graphics: Return VR graphics settings to defaults or a low preset. If the simulator exposes alternative graphics API modes, test the other mode after restarting.
  • Remove instability: Return the CPU, GPU and memory to standard clock settings. VR can expose an unstable overclock that appears acceptable on a monitor.
  • Check software changes: Update the headset software and graphics driver. If the fault began immediately after a driver update, reverting to the previous known-working driver can be more useful than repeatedly reinstalling MSFS.
  • Restart after runtime changes: MSFS may retain the runtime selected when it launched, so changing OpenXR settings while the simulator is open often has no effect.

What if VR launches but looks blurry or stutters?

If head tracking and stereoscopic vision work, VR itself is functioning; blur and stutter are performance or rendering problems.

Start with one resolution control rather than applying heavy supersampling in both the headset software and MSFS. Lower clouds, terrain detail and traffic when the main problem is inconsistent frame timing, then adjust cockpit clarity with render resolution and anti-aliasing. Our recommended MSFS 2020 and 2024 VR settings explain which controls affect clarity, GPU load and CPU load.
