To connect an Oculus-branded Quest or Meta Quest headset to a Windows PC, install the Meta Quest Link app, then use a compatible USB data cable for Quest Link or pair wirelessly through Air Link. Put on the headset, select the PC, launch Quest Link, then open the PC VR application or flight simulator.
This connection stage is the same for general PC flight simulation, including Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane and DCS. The PC renders the VR image and streams it to the Quest; simply plugging in the headset for charging or file access does not start PC VR.
Which connection should I use: Quest Link or Air Link?
Use wired Quest Link when reliability and consistent image quality matter most; use Air Link when freedom from the cable is more important.

A wired connection is usually the sensible starting point for flight simulation. It removes the wireless network as a possible cause when diagnosing poor performance, disconnections or a headset that never enters VR.
How do I connect a Quest to a PC with a USB cable?
Install Meta's Windows PC software first, then connect the headset directly to a high-speed USB port with a data-capable cable.
- Check the PC: confirm that the processor, graphics card and Windows installation meet Meta's PC VR requirements. A Quest can run standalone applications even when the computer is unsuitable for PC VR.
- Install the Meta Quest Link app: sign in, complete its headset setup flow and allow both the PC software and headset firmware to update.
- Connect the cable directly: use a USB 3-capable port where possible. Avoid an unpowered hub, monitor USB socket or front-panel extension while testing.
- Open Quest Link in the headset: select the computer and launch the PC VR session. A prompt about file access only mounts the headset as storage; it does not activate Quest Link.
- Verify the connection: use the Meta application's USB test if available, then launch a small PC VR application before troubleshooting the flight simulator itself.
Can I use any USB-C cable?
No. USB-C describes the connector, not the cable's data capability or speed. Some phone cables are intended mainly for charging and may fail the Link test, disconnect under load or fall back to a slower USB mode.
The official Link cable is not mandatory, but the alternative must carry data reliably over its full length. A long passive cable is more likely to cause trouble; longer runs may require a properly designed active cable. Even with a working connection, some PC ports cannot supply enough power to keep the headset fully charged during a long session.
How do I connect a Quest wirelessly with Air Link?
Air Link pairs the headset with the Meta Quest Link app over the local network rather than through the internet.
- Prepare the network: connect the PC to the router by Ethernet if possible. Put the headset on a supported 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi band near the router.
- Open the PC app: leave the Meta Quest Link software running and make sure the Windows firewall is not blocking it.
- Select Air Link: open the Quest Link panel inside the headset, switch to the wireless option and choose the PC.
- Confirm pairing: verify the displayed code on both devices, pair them and launch the PC VR session.
The PC and headset must be able to see each other on the same local network. Guest Wi-Fi, access-point isolation, a VPN, a distant mesh node or a wireless PC sharing the same congested channel can prevent discovery or cause severe stuttering.
Air Link is not the only wireless route. Microsoft Flight Simulator users who prefer another streamer can follow our MSFS Virtual Desktop connection workflow. Do not run Air Link and Virtual Desktop at the same time.
Why is my Oculus or Meta Quest not detected?
Most detection failures come from a charge-only cable, the wrong USB port, an isolated Wi-Fi network, blocked Meta software or a PC that cannot provide supported VR graphics encoding.
- The headset charges but Link is absent: try another data cable and a direct USB port. USB-C alone does not prove that the connection carries suitable data.
- The PC appears in Air Link but will not pair: remove the old pairing, restart the headset and PC app, then confirm both devices are on the same local network.
- The PC never appears wirelessly: leave guest networks and VPNs, check firewall permission and disable router client isolation.
- Link opens to three dots or a black display: update the graphics driver, restart the Meta software and ensure the app and simulator use the dedicated graphics processor rather than integrated graphics.
- The picture stutters or breaks into blocks: return bitrate and resolution overrides to automatic or default values, then test wired. For Air Link, move closer to the router and remove competing wireless traffic.
- VR works but sound is missing: select the Quest headset as the Windows and simulator audio output. Windows may not switch devices automatically.

How do I start a flight simulator after connecting?
Enter the PC VR environment first, confirm that the correct OpenXR runtime is active, and then switch the simulator into VR.
With Quest Link or Air Link, Meta's OpenXR runtime is normally the appropriate choice for an OpenXR simulator. A different wireless or PC VR stack may require its own runtime. Only one OpenXR runtime can be active, so changing it unnecessarily is a common reason a headset works in the Meta interface but not in the simulator.
Microsoft Flight Simulator normally starts on the monitor and switches to VR after the headset session is active. Other simulators may read their VR setting during launch and need restarting after it changes. Do older Oculus headsets connect the same way?
No. An Oculus-branded Quest uses the Quest Link method, but Rift headsets are native tethered PC VR devices with different physical connections.
- Oculus Rift CV1: connects through HDMI and USB, with separate USB-connected tracking sensors.
- Oculus Rift S: uses DisplayPort and USB. Its display connection must reach the dedicated graphics card rather than an unsuitable motherboard video output.
- Oculus Go: does not provide an official Quest Link-style PC VR connection.
A Quest does not require HDMI or DisplayPort because its compressed VR image travels over USB or the network. Meta's official PC VR connection is designed for supported Windows PCs; connecting a Quest to a Mac for charging or file transfer does not provide Quest Link PC VR.
