Run FS2000 on Windows 10 or 11 with safe install steps, compatibility settings, CD-check fixes, graphics troubleshooting and virtual-machine advice.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000 can run on some Windows 10 and 11 PCs, but it is not officially supported. Install from original media to a writable folder outside Program Files, skip the disc’s old DirectX installer, and test windowed or software-rendered graphics. If setup or CD protection fails, use an offline 32-bit Windows XP virtual machine.
How do I install FS2000 on Windows 10 or 11?
The best first attempt is a clean native installation, followed by compatibility changes only where the unmodified installer or simulator fails.
- Open the first CD in File Explorer. If AutoPlay does nothing, run
Setup.exedirectly. You can also mount an image made from your own disc, although some launch-time checks require the physical CD. - Install outside Program Files. Use a short, writable path such as
C:\Games\FS2000. Choose a full installation if offered; this reduces later disc access but does not remove the CD check. - Skip the period DirectX installer. Do not let the CD replace modern Windows components. If FS2000 specifically reports missing DirectPlay support, enable DirectPlay under Windows Features, Legacy Components; it mainly serves the old multiplayer system.
- Use only the correct official update. Any update must match the Standard or Professional edition and its language. Do not mix executables from different releases.
- Test an unmodified flight. Launch a stock aircraft at a default airport before adding scenery, aircraft or utilities.
- Adjust setup only if it fails. Try Windows XP Service Pack 3 compatibility and administrator access, then Windows 98/Me compatibility if necessary.
If files cannot be read or copied, suspect the CD or optical drive first. A USB optical drive may read the installer perfectly yet still fail FS2000’s separate copy-protection check.
Which FS2000 compatibility settings should I use?
Apply settings to the main FS2000.exe file, not merely its desktop shortcut, and change one option at a time so the effective fix remains clear.
- Windows XP compatibility: use this first for startup or initialisation failures; try Windows 98/Me if XP mode does not help.
- Windowed mode: press
Alt+Enterif full-screen mode is black or unstable. A conservative 4:3 resolution is a sensible starting point. - Disable fullscreen optimisations: use this for flickering, a black screen or an immediate return to the desktop.
- High-DPI override: set scaling to Application when menus are oversized, clipped or misplaced.
- Reduced colour or software rendering: try 16-bit colour for palette corruption and FS2000’s software renderer for missing textures or graphics-driver crashes.
- Run as administrator: reserve this for confirmed write failures. It should not be needed permanently when FS2000 is in a writable folder.
Compatibility settings cannot run 16-bit applications on a 64-bit host, restore removed copy-protection drivers or emulate period graphics hardware. Our guide to when compatibility mode helps an older simulator explains those limits.
Why does Flight Simulator 2000 not start?
Most FS2000 failures come from its installer, CD protection, folder permissions or obsolete graphics behaviour rather than inadequate PC performance.
| Symptom | Likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
This app can’t run on your PC | Legacy or 16-bit installer code | Copy the first CD to a local folder to rule out read errors; if the message remains, use a 32-bit virtual machine |
| Black screen or immediate crash | Legacy graphics presentation | Use Alt+Enter, disable fullscreen optimisations and test software rendering |
| Menus have incorrect colours | Old palette handling | Try 16-bit reduced-colour mode |
| The correct CD is rejected | Unsupported copy protection | Test a physical optical drive, then an older guest operating system |
| Settings or logbook changes disappear | No write access | Reinstall outside Program Files and check folder permissions |
Why does FS2000 ask for the CD but refuse to start?
A rejected original CD usually means Windows cannot use the protection method expected by that FS2000 release. Reading every file successfully, choosing a full installation or mounting an image does not prove that the low-level media check will pass.
Do not install an untrusted copy of secdrv.sys, disable driver-signature enforcement or use an unofficial executable. Compatibility mode cannot restore a blocked kernel driver, and graphics changes will not fix this separate problem.
In a virtual machine, pass through the physical optical drive if a mounted image is rejected. Old disc checks do not behave correctly through every virtual drive.
Is compatibility mode enough, or should I use a virtual machine?
Use compatibility mode when setup runs and the CD is recognised; move to a virtual machine when the installer contains unsupported code, the protection check is blocked or modern graphics remain unstable.
| Method | Choose it when | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Native Windows 10 or 11 | Setup, CD validation and graphics all work | Legacy protection or rendering may still fail |
| 32-bit Windows XP virtual machine | The host rejects setup or the executable | Optical-drive pass-through and virtual graphics vary |
| Windows 98 virtual machine | An XP guest has a specific compatibility fault | Drivers, audio and graphics are harder to configure |
| Period physical PC | Both virtual graphics and the CD check fail | Requires suitable older hardware and licensed software |
Use your own licensed copy of 32-bit Windows XP and keep the unsupported guest offline with networking disabled. Host processing power is rarely decisive; software rendering is often steadier than incomplete virtual 3D acceleration, although it can restrict resolution and performance.
Windows 11 on Arm adds another complication: x86 application emulation does not recreate old x86 drivers or disc-protection components. Our comparison of Flight Simulator versions and PC operating systems provides broader host-compatibility guidance.
Will FS2000 add-ons and joysticks still work?
Period-compatible add-ons and basic USB joysticks can work once the stock simulator is stable. Add one package at a time from our period-compatible FS98 and FS2000 downloads library, preserve its supplied folder structure and choose files explicitly labelled for FS2000. Our guide to extracting and installing simulator downloads safely covers the common folder mistakes.
A known package such as this FS2000-compatible aircraft download is a better test than an unlabelled FS98 or FS2002 add-on.
For controllers, verify the axes and buttons in Windows’ USB game-controller panel first. Connect and calibrate one device before adding others; basic DirectInput axes usually work, while force feedback, proprietary software and modern multi-device yoke, throttle and pedal arrangements are less dependable.
