FS2004’s original real-world weather download no longer works because its online service was withdrawn. To fly with real conditions, use an external METAR weather utility that downloads observations and injects them into Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 through a compatible FSUIPC module; use weather themes when a live feed fails.
FS2004 weather options compared
An external METAR injector is the practical choice for present-day conditions in FS2004, also known as FS9. The built-in real-world weather command may remain visible, but reinstalling the simulator will not restore its discontinued service.

How do I set up live weather in FS2004?
The working setup has three parts: FS2004, an FS2004-compatible FSUIPC module and a weather programme able to inject METAR data.
- Install the weather utility: Download an FS2004 METAR utility that fetches reports and upper-air data. Install or extract the complete package as its documentation directs rather than moving only the executable.
- Check FSUIPC: The correct FS2004-compatible FSUIPC module normally belongs in the simulator’s
Modulesfolder. Do not substitute an FSX or Prepar3D build, and do not place the weather programme itself in that folder. Registration requirements vary between utilities, so follow the included documentation. - Start FS2004: Load the flight and enter the cockpit before connecting the injector. If FS2004 runs with administrator privileges, run the weather utility at the same privilege level so Windows does not block communication between them.
- Fetch fresh observations: Use the utility’s download or update function and inspect the report time. METAR timestamps use UTC and normally end in
Z; a programme can appear to work while displaying cached or outdated data. - Inject and verify: Send the weather to FS2004, then compare the simulator’s ATIS, wind, visibility and altimeter setting with the nearest available report. Allow a short period for station-based conditions to populate.
- Keep updates running: Leave the programme open if it supports automatic refresh. A one-time injection remains only a snapshot and will not follow later reports unless it is refreshed.
Why is FS2004 real-world weather not updating?
Most failures come from a broken FSUIPC connection, stale source data or another weather process overwriting the injection.
- The utility says it is disconnected: Confirm that FS2004 is running, the correct FSUIPC DLL is installed, and both programmes use the same Windows privilege level.
- The download completes but the report is old: Check the station identifier and UTC timestamp. Older weather programmes can still launch even after their original data endpoint has changed or stopped responding.
- Conditions appear and then reset: Run only one injector. Another weather add-on or FS2004’s own dynamic weather changes may replace the injected conditions.
- A remote airport has generic weather: Not every airfield issues METAR reports. The utility must use or interpolate from the nearest reporting station, which may be many miles away.
- The wind seems different from the runway heading: METAR wind direction is reported relative to true north, while runway numbers are based on magnetic heading. Magnetic variation can make a correct report look inconsistent.
How accurately does METAR weather match real conditions?
Injected weather represents the latest reported conditions, not a second-by-second view of the atmosphere. Routine METARs are periodic, special reports are issued when required, and conditions may change between observations.
A METAR mainly describes surface wind, visibility, cloud, temperature and pressure at one station. Upper winds require a separate data source, while FS2004’s weather engine approximates cloud layers, precipitation and transitions within its own limits. Abrupt changes between reporting areas are therefore possible.
The weather also remains present-day data even if the simulator’s clock is set to a historical date. Recreating a past flight requires archived observations or manually entered conditions rather than a live METAR feed.
What can I use when the live weather feed fails?
Use a weather theme when the injector cannot obtain a fresh report or connect through FSUIPC. Themes are not live, but they provide predictable flying conditions without relying on an ageing online service.
