Play MSFS 2024 multiplayer without friends: enable public players, choose the right mode and server, and fix an empty sky.
You do not need friends or an invitation to play Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 multiplayer. Enable Online Functionality and Multiplayer, select a public player mode such as All Players or Live Players, use a populated server region, then spawn at a busy airport or event location to see and fly near other pilots.
How to join public multiplayer in MSFS 2024
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 places public players into its shared world automatically; there is no conventional lobby or server browser to join first. Menu placement can shift between simulator updates, but the relevant settings retain similar names.
- Connect and sign in: Confirm that the simulator shows an online connection and that you are signed into the account used for MSFS. Offline mode cannot display human pilots.
- Enable online services: Open the general or online settings and turn on Online Functionality and Multiplayer. Both must be enabled.
- Select a public player mode: In Free Flight's flight-conditions or multiplayer panel, choose All Players for the largest pool or Live Players for pilots sharing live conditions. Do not select Group Only or a private group.
- Check the server region: Use the automatically selected low-latency region first. If the sky remains empty, try another nearby populated region, accepting that greater latency can make aircraft movement less stable.
- Choose a busy location: Major airports and organised fly-in locations provide the best chance of meeting people. Start at a parking stand rather than appearing on an occupied runway.
- Enable player labels if needed: Aircraft nameplates make human-controlled traffic easier to distinguish, but they only affect labels; turning them off does not remove the aircraft.
Our explanation of shared-world, group and traffic behaviour covers the broader multiplayer system. Public mode lets you encounter strangers, but it does not match pilots by route or make them follow your flight plan.
Should I choose All Players or Live Players?
All Players is normally the best choice when the goal is simply to find other people.
| Multiplayer mode | Who appears | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| All Players | The broadest public population, including pilots using different time or weather settings | Casual flying and finding populated airports |
| Live Players | Pilots using the live multiplayer environment and live conditions | Flying with a consistent real-time environment |
| Group Only or private | Invited group members | Pre-arranged flights, not meeting strangers |
A mistake we see constantly is enabling real-time online air traffic and expecting human pilots. That setting supplies real-world airline traffic; it is separate from multiplayer.
Why can’t I see other players?
An empty sky usually means multiplayer is disabled, the selected pool is quiet, or an account or network restriction is blocking public traffic.
- Confirm that both Online Functionality and Multiplayer remain enabled after restarting the simulator.
- Switch from Live Players to All Players to widen the available population.
- Check that the simulator has not placed you in a distant or lightly populated server region.
- Try a major airport at a busy local time; the shared world is too large for random traffic to be visible everywhere.
- On consoles, verify that the account permits online and cross-network play and has any platform multiplayer access required.
- Do not use aircraft nameplates as the test. Labels can be disabled while the aircraft themselves remain visible.
- If a crowded location is still empty, toggle multiplayer off and on, reconnect the online services, and restart the simulator.
Persistent visibility, privacy, server and network problems are covered in our MSFS 2024 multiplayer troubleshooting steps.
Can I talk to random pilots?
Public MSFS multiplayer displays other aircraft but does not automatically place nearby pilots into a shared voice channel. The simulator's normal ATC also does not become player-to-player voice communication.
PC pilots wanting structured radio communication and human controllers can use our setup guide for joining the VATSIM network. It requires a separate account and client, adherence to network rules and basic radio preparation; disable conflicting multiplayer or AI traffic so duplicate aircraft do not appear.
How do I find organised flights without knowing anyone?
A virtual club is more effective than waiting at a random airport when you want company, scheduled routes and repeat group flights. Our guidance on finding a beginner-friendly flying club and joining its events explains what to check before signing up.
You can still use All Players for spontaneous encounters. Clubs and organised networks are the better choice when you want coordination rather than merely sharing the same airspace.
